A Redditor's experience at a Bengaluru park has reignited a language debate on social media. The user shared that they had a heated debate with a woman in her 60s regarding Hindi vs the local language. The user shared their experience on the r/Bengaluru subreddit, claiming that many Hindi-speaking people enjoy the perks and opportunities offered by Bengaluru but don't follow the rules there. The Redditor said they were “creeped out" by their experience in the park. “This is exactly why people end up hating, and then the same people cry about racism," the post said.
The post sparked mixed reactions, with many individuals supporting the Redditor's point of view. The authenticity of the incident cannot be independently verified.
Redditor's Post About Language Row In Bengaluru
As per the post, the user was sitting in a park when an elderly woman began speaking to them in Hindi. The user replied in Kannada and English. The woman then “questioned what I learned in school and asked why I don't know Hindi. That triggered me badly," the post read.
The Redditor explained to the woman that Hindi was not the national language and it is not obligatory for anyone to know it, but she started shouting at them. “I've seen this attitude so often with some Hindi-speaking people, especially the so-called elite ones. They're rude, entitled, and behave like they own Bengaluru. They come here, enjoy the city and its opportunities, don't follow any rules, but still blame locals and badmouth the place everywhere," the post continued.

Many people recalled the times they had faced a similar situation. “I'm from NE, and I have faced the same situation multiple times. Have learnt to ignore and move on," a person commented.
“She's frustrated with herself for not knowing Kannada and venting it out in this manner. Looking down on others is the easy way out for most problems," another remarked.
“I don't understand why someone expects someone to know any particular language. We all learn languages as per our need. As a Hindi speaker myself, I ignore such stupid people. Not everyone is trying to impose the language, some are just ignorant and foolish," a user explained.
“If she went to the UK, she would demand everyone there to speak Hindi as well," an account quipped.

Some, however, had a different point of view. “Pretty sure she's not elite then, my guy. Probably, someone's mother who has never left or been anywhere except the North, so they consider Hindi being universal. She probably should've been better informed by their son/daughter as to what is the norm here," a person pointed out.
The Hindi vs local language debate has been a flashpoint time and again in various parts of the country. A few weeks ago, a fresh row erupted in Karnataka after Kannada was excluded by the South Western Railway as a medium for a departmental promotion examination in their Bengaluru division.
