Bengaluru Metro Orange Line Delayed: Double-Decker Flyover Adds To Traffic Chaos, What To Expect
The Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) has announced a significant design change in Phase 3 of Namma Metro, also known as the Orange Line. BMRCL has decided to incorporate double-decker flyovers along certain stretches to address future traffic congestion. This modification is expected to delay the project by at least a year and increase the overall cost by around 5 per cent.
A BMRCL official said, “We are incorporating double-decker flyovers along specific stretches of Phase 3 to address future road congestion. While this will add significant value by decongesting traffic and optimising space, it also means construction will take an additional year," as reported by The Hindu.
What's The New Deadline?
Originally slated for completion by 2029 or mid-2030, the project will now aim for a May 2031 launch. The construction is expected to take around five and a half years to complete from the start date. The tenders are expected to be called by November 2025, and groundwork is likely to begin by December 2025 or January 2026.
The construction will be divided into eight tender packages for faster implementation across the corridors.
Phase 3 Overview Across Two Corridors
The orange line will span over 44 km and include 31 elevated stations, aiming to connect residential, industrial, commercial and educational hubs. It consists of two main corridors. Corridor 1 covers 32.15 km from J.P. Nagar 4th Phase to Kempapura, while corridor 2 spans 12.5 km from Hosahalli to Kadabagere.
The double-decker design requires about 25 per cent more land due to the increased height of the alignment, prompting road-widening measures and additional land acquisition, the news outlet quoted the official as saying.
PM Modi Lays Foundation Stone for Phase 3
On August 10, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the long-awaited Yellow Line (linking R.V. Road to Bommasandra). During the same event, he also laid the foundation stone for Phase 3 of the metro network.
The entire project is estimated to cost Rs 15,611 crore, with Rs 7,577 crore through loans, while another Rs 450 crore is expected to be raised through non-fare revenue (advertising, naming rights, etc.).
Boosting Connectivity Across Metro Network
Phase 3 is strategically planned to connect with other metro lines, offering several interchange points with the existing and upcoming lines of Namma Metro. These include Peenya and JP Nagar stations on the Green Line, Mysuru Road Station on the Purple Line, and Sumanahalli Station on the Hosahalli–Kadabagere corridor.
JP Nagar Phase 4 will be connecting to the Pink Line at Bannerghatta Road, while Hebbal is expected to serve as a key node linking to the Blue Line (to Kempegowda International Airport) and Red Line (Hebbal–Sarjapur).
Flyovers to Handle 7.85 Lakh Daily Riders
Once operational, the Orange Line will improve metro access to the western side of the Outer Ring Road and underserved stretches along Magadi Road. The corridor is projected to handle 7.85 lakh passengers daily.
With Phase 3, the total length of Bengaluru's metro network will extend to 222.2 km, positioning it as one of the largest urban metro systems in the country.
Land Acquisition and Surveys Underway

Preliminary groundwork such as geotechnical surveys has already been completed. Land acquisition is actively underway, especially in sections impacted by the new double-decker design.
Despite the delay, the official stated. “We are confident that despite the revised deadline, the integration of double-decker flyovers will enhance long-term efficiency and provide much-needed relief to road commuters."
