Before The Monsoon Hits Delhi-NCR: 10 Health Precautions Every Household Should Take
As the rainy season approaches, families often focus on preparing their homes, but preparing their health is just as important. Dr Akshata Ravindra, Infectious Disease Specialist, Apollo Medical Centre, Marathahalli, Bengaluru, believes taking a few preventive measures before the monsoon arrives can significantly reduce the risk of seasonal illnesses and help keep every member of the family safe.
According to Dr Ravindra, the most common illnesses during the pre-monsoon and monsoon months include dengue, malaria, chikungunya, viral infections, diarrhoea, food poisoning, typhoid, acute respiratory infections, and leptospirosis.
“High humidity, stagnant water, and contaminated food and drinking water create the ideal conditions for these infections to spread," she explains.
Get Your Health in Order Before the Rains
Dr Akshata Ravindra advises individuals with chronic conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, asthma, or heart disease to ensure that their health is well managed before the rainy season begins.
“This is also an ideal time to review your vaccination status, particularly for influenza, pneumococcal disease, and other age-appropriate vaccines," she says.
She also recommends keeping an adequate supply of regularly prescribed medications at home to avoid interruptions in treatment during periods of heavy rainfall.
While many people look for immunity-boosting supplements, Dr. Akshata Ravindra says there is no single food or supplement that can magically strengthen the immune system.
“The best way to support immunity is by following a balanced lifestyle," she explains.
This includes:
Eating a balanced diet with fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and adequate protein
Staying well hydrated
Exercising regularly
Getting sufficient sleep
Managing stress effectively
These simple habits help the immune system function optimally throughout the season.
Food and water hygiene become even more important during the monsoon.
According to Dr Akshata Ravindra, families should:
Drink boiled, filtered, or otherwise safe drinking water.
Eat freshly prepared, hot meals.
Avoid stale food and uncooked street food.
Wash fruits and vegetables thoroughly before consumption.
Wash hands regularly, especially before eating and after using the toilet.
“Good hygiene remains one of the simplest yet most effective ways to prevent infections," she adds.
Mosquito breeding increases dramatically during the rainy season, making diseases such as dengue, malaria, and chikungunya more common. A few recommendations are as follows:
Removing stagnant water from coolers, flower pots, buckets, and other containers.
Using mosquito repellents regularly.
Installing mosquito screens on windows and doors.
Sleeping under mosquito nets where necessary.
Wearing full-sleeved clothing.
Limiting outdoor activities during early mornings and evenings when mosquitoes are most active.
According to Dr Ravindra, children, older adults, pregnant women, and people with chronic illnesses or weakened immune systems are at a higher risk of developing complications from seasonal infections.
“They should avoid self-medication, continue taking their regular medications, and consult a doctor promptly if symptoms develop," she advises.
Every household should prepare a basic first-aid kit before the rainy season arrives.
Dr. Akshata Ravindra recommends including:
A thermometer
Regular prescription medications
Paracetamol (for fever)
Oral Rehydration Salts (ORS)
Antiseptic cream or lotion
Bandages
Mosquito repellent
She cautions against stocking antibiotics at home unless they have been specifically prescribed by a doctor.
Do not delay medical care if you experience:
Fever lasting more than two days
Difficulty breathing
Persistent vomiting
Extreme weakness
Bleeding
Reduced urine output
Confusion
Symptoms that continue to worsen instead of improving
According to Dr Ravindra, early diagnosis and timely treatment can prevent complications and improve recovery.
To stay healthy throughout the rainy season, Dr Ravindra recommends:
Prevent water stagnation around your home.
Drink safe water and eat freshly cooked food.
Wash your hands regularly.
Use mosquito repellents and wear protective clothing.
Never ignore persistent fever or other warning signs.
“Most monsoon-related illnesses are preventable," says Dr Ravindra. “A few simple measures, such as maintaining good hygiene, preventing mosquito breeding, consuming safe food and water, and seeking timely medical care, can go a long way in keeping families healthy throughout the rainy season."
With a little preparation before the rains begin, families can significantly reduce their risk of seasonal illnesses and enjoy a safer, healthier monsoon.
