Be Verstappen's Aide Or Foe? Red Bull Racing Reveal What Isack Hadjar Is Expected To Do In 2026
Laurent Mekies has made one thing very clear: Isack Hadjar's promotion to Red Bull is not a reward, it's a challenge.
As the 21-year-old Frenchman prepares to step up from Racing Bulls to partner Max Verstappen in 2026, Red Bull's expectations are rooted firmly in growth.
Hadjar's rookie F1 season in 2025 didn't start smoothly. A spin on the rain-hit formation lap in Australia threatened to define his introduction to the sport. Instead, it became the footnote.
What followed was a sharp response — consistent points finishes, growing confidence, and a breakthrough maiden podium at Zandvoort.
That trajectory convinced Red Bull to make their move. Days before the Abu Dhabi finale, it was confirmed that Hadjar would replace Yuki Tsunoda for 2026, with the Japanese driver shifting into a test and reserve role across Red Bull's programmes.
Looking back on Hadjar's first year, Mekies was emphatic.
“Isack has had an unbelievable first season," he said. “In terms of starting point, where he was in January, it was outstanding."
But raw speed alone isn't what sold Red Bull. According to Mekies, it was Hadjar's rate of development that truly stood out.
“We believe not only in talent, but in the ability of drivers to develop. We've seen Isack doing things in the car that he simply wasn't doing three races earlier."
That evolution is exactly why Red Bull aren't framing 2026 as an arrival.
“We don't see this as a landing point," Mekies explained. “We see it as another start."
The message is unmistakable: Hadjar isn't being asked to match Verstappen overnight, but he is expected to keep improving, keep surprising, and keep earning his place.

“We expect that journey to continue in the second year, the third year, maybe even the fourth," Mekies added. “That's the journey for us together."
In other words, the bar has been set, and it doesn't stop rising.
