Bar Council suspends advocate husband accused in alleged Madhya Pradesh dowry death case
The Bar Council of India on Friday suspended advocate Samarth Singh from legal practice with immediate effect, days after his wife died, allegedly after being harassed for dowry, PTI reported.
Twisha Sharma, a 33-year-old model-turned-actor from Noida, was found dead at her marital home in Bhopal’s Katara Hills area on May 12. Her husband’s family claimed that she had killed herself.
However, her family alleged that she was harassed for dowry and murdered.
On Friday, Singh, who had been on the run for over a week, withdrew an anticipatory bail petition he had filed in the Madhya Pradesh High Court and surrendered before a court in Jabalpur, reported PTI.
The Bhopal Police subsequently arrested the advocate.
In an interim order, the Bar Council of India described the accusations against Singh as “grave” and said that they impacted the dignity and public image of the legal profession, according to the news agency.
The legal body also noted that it was under a statutory obligation to preserve the purity of the profession and to ensure that the conduct of advocates does not erode public confidence.
The interim order said that Singh was suspended from his practice as an advocate with immediate effect, pending further consideration by the Bar Council of India or an appropriate disciplinary committee.
In the High Court, a second autopsy of Twisha’s body was ordered by a specialised team from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in Delhi after concerns were raised by her family.
The court also issued notice to Twisha's mother-in-law, Giribala Singh, on a petition seeking cancellation of her bail for alleged non-cooperation with the investigation.
