'Bad Joke, Democratic Disgrace': Macron's Move to Reappoint Lecornu As PM Sparks Backlash
French President Emmanuel Macron on Friday reappointed Sebastien Lecornu as the Prime Minister just four days after he stepped down, in an attempt to pull the country out of one of its most severe political crises in decades. The move by the French President has triggered a backlash, with many political leaders calling it a “bad joke."
Accepting the role once again, Lecornu said, “It is my duty to accept the mission entrusted to me by the President to do everything in my power to give France a budget for the end of the year and to respond to the everyday problems of our compatriots. We need to put an end to this political crisis, which is exasperating the French people, and to this instability, which is bad for France's image and its interests."
Leaders from opposition parties were quick to condemn the reappointment. Jordan Bardella, president of the far-right National Rally, called it “a bad joke, a democratic disgrace and a humiliation for the French people."
“"The Lecornu II government, appointed by Emmanuel Macron who is more isolated and out of touch than ever at the Elysee Palace, is a bad joke, a democratic disgrace and a humiliation for the French people," said Bardella, according to news agency Reuters.
While French far-right leader Marine Le Pen warned that all parties aiding Macron in what she called “this shameful manipulation" would be held accountable in upcoming elections.
“All the political parties that helped Emmanuel Macron gain the time he needed to implement this shameful manipulation will be held to account at the next elections" Pen said.
The Reuters report mentioned that, Stephane Trousssel, a spokesperson for the Socialist Party, denounced the move as “a farce," saying Macron's time in office “will soon be coming to an end."
“It's a farce. In which Emmanuel Macron is the protagonist. A bad joke for millions of citizens who expect change and hope for the future. They can rest assured that this President's reign will soon be coming to an end," Trousssel remarked.
Green Party leader Marine Tondelier said it was “incredible" that Macron chose to reappoint “one of his very close friends" instead of allowing the left and ecologists to lead.
Meanwhile, some voices from within Macron's circle urged cooperation. Outgoing budget minister Amélie de Montchalin said, “We must give our country a budget," stressing the need for compromise. Catherine Vautrin, outgoing health minister, expressed confidence in Lecornu's ability to “restore the stability that our country so desperately needs."
At the National Assembly, president Yaël Braun-Pivet said it was time “to get down to work," while Mathilde Panot of France Unbowed accused Macron of governing “by disgust and anger." Conservative leader Eric Ciotti simply urged lawmakers to “vote the government down."
According to Reuters, Lecornu's immediate task will be to deliver a budget to parliament by the end of Monday.
a close ally of President Emmanuel Macron, Lecornu, who took charge of the PM's Office on September 9, 2025, had resigned with his 14-hour-old cabinet on Monday. He was Macron's fifth prime minister in two years.
