Marriage always comes with certain expectations, especially about what makes a “good" daughter-in-law. For years, women have been judged on how well they manage household duties and follow family rules. These old standards often clash with the way modern women live, work and follow her dreams.
Recently, a video has surfaced online that shows a mother talking about her son's views on modern women. She said that her son, who works in Bollywood, is struggling to find a suitable bride. According to her son, women today are fine as friends but not “fit to be a daughter-in-law." Her remarks sparked debate about gender expectations with author and academician Shradha Ahuja Ramani weighing in on the matter and sharing her perspective online.
A Mother's Controversial Remarks
In the video, shared on Instagram, the mother explained, “Beta, Bollywood mein hai. Hum use puchte hai ki – ‘Beta koi apne pasand ki ladki, shaadi karlo, humko na dhudna pade.' Toh kehta hai ki – ‘Mummy ek bhi ladki aisi nahi hai jise shaadi karke ghar le aao. Ek bhi ladki nahi hai jinko hum shadi kar laye, prem ki toh baat hi bahut door hai.' Yaari hai, dosti hai, sab kuch hai lekin wo ghar ki bahu banana layak nahi hai (My son is in Bollywood. I asked him, ‘Son, why don't you marry someone you like so we don't have to search?' He said, ‘Mom, there isn't a single girl I can bring home for marriage. Friendship is fine, but no one is worthy of becoming a daughter-in-law.')"
Calling Out Double Standards
Author and academician Shradha shared her take on Instagram where she called out the mother's comments. She said, “‘Bahu banana layak' se kya matlab hai aapka? Teen time aapke yaha par gulamo ki tarah khana banaye, subah sabse pehle uthe, raat ko sabse der se soye, apni saari ichaayein marke rakh de… Aur aise tum publicly ridicule karo ladkiyon ko? (What do you mean by ‘worthy of becoming a daughter-in-law'? Cooking three times a day like a servant, waking up first, sleeping last, suppressing all desires… and then publicly mocking women?)"
Shradha pointed out that modern women manage education, careers and homes, yet are still measured by old-fashioned standards. She also questioned whether her son himself would meet traditional expectations before judging women.
“Maze karne ke liye tumko modern ladkiyan chaiye aur ghar par tumhari mummy ke order follow kare. Aur aise tum publicly ridicule karo ladkiyon ko? Aa paise statement dete rahiye, ladkiyan kabhi shaadi karne ko tyaar nahi hongi. Wese karne lagi hai, aap thoda apnea ap ko update kijiye. Aap mana nahi kar rahi hai, wahi mana kar rahi hai (You want modern girls for fun but at home, they must follow your mother's orders. And then you publicly ridicule women like this? Keep making statements like these, and women will never be willing to marry. By the way, you should also update yourself a bit. You are not saying no. It's actually you who are being rejected)," Shradha added.
In her caption, the author wrote, “A girl studies. She works. She earns. She manages her home. Yet, she is still judged as ‘not good enough.' Who gave society the right to measure a woman's worth?"

Social Media Isn't Holding Back
With over a million views, the footage has become a viral sensation. Not only this, it has also triggered a discussion online about the mother's remarks and how women are judged in society.
One user commented sarcastically, “So glad that they are not able to find ‘bahu' for themselves, we did it girls."
Another said, “Actually, they want a maid, not a wife or daughter-in-law."
“This woman is so oblivious. She made a mockery of herself and we are loving it," someone remarked.
A viewer noted that over time, society has normalised expecting women to accept unfair treatment. According to them, if a woman speaks up against any injustice or sets boundaries, she is often labelled as “not layak (unworthy)."
