Ayurveda’s Answer To Urban Smog: Detox And Strengthen Lungs Naturally
Every winter, cities such as Delhi become covered in layers of thick smog, causing air quality levels to dip to hazardous ranges. AQI frequently exceeds 400, leading to respiratory discomfort, throat irritation, fatigue, and overall exhaustion. While masks and air purifiers can offer some support, Ayurveda provides a deeper, holistic approach, one that focuses on building resilience from the inside out.
Using simple herbs, daily routines, and mindful breathing, Dr Puneet Dhawan, Founder & Director, Karma Ayurveda, shares natural ways to cleanse the lungs and strengthen them against pollution.
1. Nourishing the Lungs with Turmeric & Amla
Turmeric has long been recognised for its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. A warm cup of turmeric milk helps calm irritated airways and supports the immune system, especially helpful when pollution affects the throat and nasal passages. Gargling with warm turmeric-infused water can also soothe irritation caused by smog.
Amla, or Indian gooseberry, is another powerful Ayurvedic ingredient and a rich source of Vitamin C, known for combating oxidative stress triggered by pollution. Drinking fresh amla juice each morning or simply eating one fresh amla can strengthen lung tissue, enhance immune function, and prevent pollution-induced dullness in the skin. Together, turmeric and amla form a strong natural defence against urban air toxins.
2. Cleansing and Shielding Through Daily Ayurvedic Rituals
Simple rituals can offer daily protection. Oil pulling with sesame or coconut oil for five minutes each morning helps strengthen the mucous lining of the mouth and throat—your body's first barrier against airborne pollutants.
Neem water is another potent addition. Bathing with water infused with boiled neem leaves helps remove pollutants settled on the skin and hair, minimising irritation and preventing toxins from entering through the pores.
Nasya therapy, a traditional Ayurvedic practice, involves instilling warm herbal oils or medicated juices into the nostrils. This clears nasal passages, reduces excess mucus, and restores doshic balance. As the nose is considered the gateway to the head, Nasya supports both respiratory and cognitive health, making it a powerful daily detox practice.
3. Breathing Practices to Detoxify the Lungs
No Ayurvedic routine for respiratory wellness is complete without pranayama. Anulom Vilom, or alternate-nostril breathing, is especially effective during high-pollution periods. Practised for 10–15 minutes daily, it helps clear the airways, increase lung capacity, strengthen respiratory muscles, and calm the nervous system. Since stress can worsen airway inflammation, pranayama's calming effect is particularly valuable.
Regular practice acts as a natural purifier, helping the lungs expel irritants more efficiently.
As urban smog becomes an annual reality, strengthening the body rather than relying solely on external aids becomes essential. Ayurveda doesn't promise instant results; instead, it offers gradual, sustainable strengthening of the lungs and immune system.
