IND vs ZIM: Avengers Assemble in Chennai as India storm back into semifinal race

IND vs ZIM: Avengers Assemble in Chennai as India storm back into semifinal race
IND vs ZIM, T20 World Cup Super 8: Forget solo acts. India’s ensemble cast turned up the heat at Chepauk, plundering a record 256 to outclass Zimbabwe and reignite their T20 World Cup dreams in Chennai. Brian Bennett’s valiant 97 went in vain as Zimbabwe lost by 72 runs.
Brief scores: India (256/4 in 20 ovs) beat Zimbabwe (184/6 in 20 ov) by 72 runs in Chennai in a Super 8 match.
When you have the Avengers at your disposal, why rely on a single superhero? That was the vital lesson India appeared to have finally learnt on Thursday. Having been guilty of over-indexed aggression earlier in the tournament, India found their Goldilocks zone in the sweltering coastal heat of Chennai, scaling a new peak while systematically dismantling Zimbabwe’s resolve.
By plundering 256, the second-highest total in T20 World Cup history, India cruised to a comprehensive 72-run victory. The result secured their first win of the Super 8 stage and kept them firmly in the hunt for a semi-final berth.
The equation is now simple: India’s clinical display ensures a virtual quarter-final against the West Indies on Sunday in Kolkata. Earlier in the day in Ahmedabad, South Africa’s demolition of the West Indies booked the Proteas’ spot in the final four. Zimbabwe, meanwhile, are out of contention after back-to-back losses in the Super 8 – a far cry from their perfect run in the group stage in Sri Lanka.
Only days after conceding 254 to the West Indies in Mumbai, Zimbabwe ran headfirst into an Indian side desperate to recalibrate. Following their own bruising at the hands of South Africa, India arrived at the MA Chidambaram Stadium with a point to prove.
The humidity may have been thick enough to cut with a knife, but India’s batting was razor-sharp. Their towering 256 proved an insurmountable mountain; despite 22-year-old Brian Bennett’s composed and skilful 97 off 59 balls,
Zimbabwe never came close to scaling that Himalayan target. Even as the sea breeze failed to provide relief to the fielding side, India refused to let their intensity drop. Captain Suryakumar Yadav held his composure even when Bennett and skipper Sikandar Raza added 72 for the third wicket in just 41 balls. Zimbabwe paid the price for taking too long to get going, despite knowing they were not running a marathon but attempting a near-impossible sprint.
Arshdeep Singh was the pick of the Indian bowlers, claiming three wickets, including the key scalp of Zimbabwe captain Sikandar Raza.
India have now crossed the 250-run mark five times in T20Is, but Thursday marked the first occasion they scaled such heights without an individual century. It was a true ensemble performance. Half-centuries from Abhishek Sharma (55 off 30) and Hardik Pandya (50 off 23)* provided the backbone, supported by three vital contributions in excess of 30: Suryakumar Yadav (33 off 13), Ishan Kishan (38 off 24), and a blistering 44 off 18 from India’s new finisher, Tilak Varma.
Sanju Samson’s 15-ball 24 was equally selfless. Restored to the opening slot to break up the trio of left-handers – a tactical adjustment to counter the off-spin threat that had stifled India in recent games – Samson absorbed the early risk, allowing Abhishek the breathing space to find his rhythm.
Thanks to Samson’s return — and a noticeable lack of imagination from Zimbabwe — off-spin was not deployed during the powerplay. It was an open secret that India’s top order had been tested by off-spin, even part-time off-spin, throughout the tournament. Prior to Thursday, they had lost 19 wickets to spin, 12 of them to off-spinners — including part-timers such as Salman Ali Agha, Aiden Markram, and Aryan Dutt.
Zimbabwe instead opted for pace upfront and paid the price, as India plundered 80 runs in the powerplay. There was no looking back from that point, as the Avengers had their launchpad.
Remarkably, every Indian batter struck at a rate above 150. Tilak Varma, batting below No. 5 for only the seventh time in his T20I career, showcased his versatility by excelling in the finisher’s role, registering a staggering strike rate of 275. So clean was his ball-striking – yielding four towering sixes and three boundaries – that the services of Shivam Dube, Chennai Super Kings’ resident six-hitting machine, were not even required to satisfy the partisan crowd.
“We wanted to leave everything behind, the last game, the group stage. There was contributions from all batters and that was heartening to see,” captain Suryakumar said, beaming with pride, after the win.
India had secured a minor victory before a ball was bowled. As fans queued along Chennai’s coastal roads and packed into the iconic stands of the renovated Chepauk, all eyes were glued to mobile screens. News of the West Indies’ defeat to South Africa in Ahmedabad filtered through, significantly brightening India’s path to the semi-finals.’
Several Indian players, including Hardik Pandya, conceded that they were keeping a close eye on the game in Ahmedabad.l
“We were all keeping an eye on the South African and West Indies game. Definitely we were keeping an eye, but at the same point in time, once the game got over, we shifted our focus to this game,” he said after winning the Player of the Match award for his sensational show with the bat.
The atmosphere in the city was not the pressure cooker many might have expected following Sunday’s 76-run defeat to the Proteas. By producing their ‘A’ game against a West Indian side that looked a shadow of its destructive self, South Africa did India a considerable favour, easing the tension before the hosts even stepped onto the turf to the roar of the Chennai faithful.
