In a major setback for the Congress, Pradyut Bordoloi, the party MP from Assam, tendered his resignation on Tuesday ahead of the Assembly elections in Assam next month.
In a letter addressed to Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, Bordoloi said, “With an overwhelming sense of sadness today, I hereby tender my resignation from all posts, privileges and the primary membership of the Indian National Congress."

A former state cabinet minister and two-time MP from Nagaon constituency, Bordoloi’s resignation came a month after former Assam Congress chief Bhupen Kumar Borah resigned from the party, citing “high-handedness" of current state unit chief Gaurav Gogoi.
Congress’ media department chief Bedabrata Bora said Gogoi and AICC’s general secretary in-charge of Assam Jitendra Singh are meeting with Bordoloi over the issue in Delhi. “They are meeting with Bordoloi now. Details of the discussions are awaited," Bora said.
Why Did Bordoloi Resign?
Bordoloi has been affiliated with Congress’s student wing NSUI and was a four-time MLA from Margherita constituency till 2016. He was also the chairman of the manifesto committee for the Assembly polls. His son Prateek is a Congress candidate from the Margherita seat for the state polls due on April 9.
Bordoloi’s resignation came a month after Bhupen Kumar Borah had quit the opposition party to join the ruling BJP. Another senior Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) leader and a close aide of Bordoloi, Nabajyoti Talukdar, also resigned from the party earlier on Tuesday.
Bordoloi had recently sent a letter to Jitendra Singh, stating that he could resign from the party if incumbent Lahorighat MLA Asif Mohammad Nazar was renominated for the Assembly polls. The MP said in the letter that Nazar’s close aide Emdadul Islam was involved in an attack on Bordoloi and other party leaders in April 2025, and was also charge-sheeted by the police in the case.
He also alleged that Islam was later taken to Gaurav Gogoi’s house and felicitated at an event on January 11, where he was seen sitting beside Gogoi. Meanwhile, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had publicly invited Bordoloi to join the BJP ahead of the resignation, although he denied having any personal contact with the MP.
The Election Commission of India on Thursday announced the schedule for the upcoming Assembly elections in Assam. The polling process will take place in one phase, with voting set to begin on April 9, 2026, and the counting of votes will take place on May 4, 2026.
