Assam CM sticks to his ‘Miya’ remarks
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, on Sunday (February 1, 2026), defended his recent remarks, referring to the “Miya” community and linking rickshaw operations to alleged illegal immigrants, insisting that his comments were based on legal and administrative considerations rather than targeting any particular community.
Addressing a gathering at the Women Entrepreneurship Fund Distribution Programme in western Assam's Goalpara district, he clarified that by using the term “Miya”, he was referring specifically to people who entered India illegally from Bangladesh. He argued that existing laws do not permit illegal immigrants to work or earn a livelihood in the State.
“In this country, only Indian citizens can work. So, how can people from Bangladesh operate rickshaws here?” Mr. Sarma said.
“I said people should pay ₹4 instead of ₹5. But if the law is applied strictly, then illegal immigrants will not be able to run rickshaws here at all,” he added, referring to an earlier comment on rickshaw fares.
The Chief Minister reiterated his government's hardline stance on illegal immigration, acknowledging that deportation posed practical challenges, but asserting that his administration would continue to act firmly.
“It is not easy to deport them. Until they leave, they will face difficulties. They cannot live in Assam with ease. Till I am the Chief Minister, I will not spare any Bangladeshi. I will keep troubling them,” he said.
He also claimed that the issue of undocumented migration was a legacy problem inherited from previous Congress governments and could not be resolved overnight. “These problems were created earlier. It will take time to fix them,” he said, after distributing cheques of ₹10,000 each to 24,000 women entrepreneurs.
While defending his statements, Mr. Sarma maintained that his government's priority was to protect the rights and livelihoods of Indian citizens. Employment opportunities in Assam must first be secured for locals and lawful residents, he said.
The Chief Minister's comments have sparked renewed debate amid Assam's long-running and sensitive discourse on immigration, citizenship, and livelihood rights. The remarks have drawn criticism, with opponents accusing him of stigmatising the Bengali-speaking Muslims.
