Asia Championships: PV Sindhu Goes Down To World No 2; Ayush Wins But Prannoy And Unnati Lose
PV Sindhu lost to World No. 2 Wang Zhi Yi of China 18-21, 8-21 in the women’s singles pre-quarterfinals at the Badminton Asia Championships Ningbo on Thursday.
The head-to-head ahead of this match — which lasted for just 46 minutes — was equal between them, and now the win-loss in past meetups reads 4-3 in favour of the Chinese star.
The Indian star shuttler had earlier defeated Malaysia’s Wong Ling Ching 15-21, 21-11, 21-19 in 1 hour and 7 minutes.
Ayush Shetty defeated Chi Yu Jen 21-16, 21-12 in 41 minutes. He will next face third seed Jonatan Christie of Indonesia.
Ayush used his height to unleash steep smashes and kept tight control at the net to dominate the match.
The opening game was closely contested, with the scores level at 4-4 before Chi pulled ahead 10-6.
After the break, Ayush clawed his way back, drawing level at 12-12 and then taking command as Chi struggled with his length and committed a series of unforced errors.
The Indian surged to 18-14 and closed out the game comfortably.
In the second game, Ayush raced to a 4-0 lead before Chi briefly caught up.
Regaining his rhythm, the Indian led 11-7 at the interval and never looked back, using aggressive returns and sharp net play to move to 16-9.
He soon wrapped up the match, sealing it with a crisp backhand at the net.
However, it was a disappointing day for the rest of the Indian contingent.
HS Prannoy, returning after a shoulder injury, lost to Weng Hong Yang of China 12-21, 19-21 in 47 minutes
Dhruv Kapila and Tanisha Crasto lost to Malaysia’s Chen Tang Jie and Toh Ee Wei 13-21, 14-21 in 37 minutes.
Unnati Hooda lost to Tomoka Miyazaki 17-21, 9-21 in just 39 minutes.
The women’s doubles pair of Priya Konjengbam and Shruti Mishra, will be in action later in the day after PV Sindhu‘s loss.
Lakshya Sen, Kidambi Srikanth, Malvika Bansod and Tanvi Sharma exited in the opening round.
