Sridhar Vembu, the founder of Zoho and a vocal advocate for rural revitalisation, recently penned an emotional “Open Letter" to Indians in America. His message was clear: America might have been good to you, but with rising anti-immigrant sentiment and a “civilisational battle" brewing in the US, it’s time to bring that tech leadership back to Bharat.
“Respect in today’s world, along with prosperity and security, comes from one source: a nation’s technological prowess. India produces sufficient brain power to achieve that prowess but alas we exported so much of that talent, particularly to America. As we develop that prowess in India, our civilisational strength will assert itself. As difficult as it is for many of you to contemplate this, please come back home. Bharat Mata needs your talent. Our vast youthful population needs the technology leadership you gained over the years to guide them towards prosperity. Let’s do it with a missionary zeal," Vembu wrote, urging the diaspora to return with “missionary zeal" to guide India’s youthful population toward prosperity.
Ashneer Grover, the former BharatPe co-founder entered the chat. He didn’t just disagree but got to dismantling the sentiment with the cold, hard logic of a man who looks at numbers before emotions. Taking to X, Grover attributed Vembu’s take to the soaring Indian summer. “What delulu! Record breaking heat in India is clearly making people dizzy. Just DON’T – be scientific in your approach. Look at numbers – $1 = ₹94. Temperature = 50C," Grover fired back.

The debate triggered X, with over seven lakh views and a polarised comment section that reflects the 2026 Indian reality. “Patriotism is important, but asking people to return without addressing basic issues is not practical," wrote one user. Another commented, “India needs talent, but talent also needs infrastructure, clean cities and better work culture." One user also responded to Grover. “You were born in India and you are destined to be indian for your whole life. Other countries don’t have any obligation to have you. If you cant contribute to India’s growth then atleast you should keep your mouth shut and not discourage others."
Another user posed a question to Vembu: just a few lakhs are outside, say even a crore people are outside.
India has the youngest people by age to population? Why not develop them to lead? Almost a billion here living for what? What difference wil it make, pls reply."
To this Vembu responded: “Consider advanced fields like carbon fiber, or lasers or jet engines, … we need expertise in all of these and that takes years of experience. That experience is valuable to bring back home.
Second, migrants tend to be more driven – it was the drive that propelled them outward – and that drive is valuable to bring back home."
