FIDE World Cup: Arjun Erigaisi Cruises To Comfy Draw In Game 1 Of Quarterfinal

Indian GM Arjun Erigaisi kept things steady on Monday as he eased to a clean draw against China's Wei Yi in the first game of the quarterfinals, staying firmly on track in his pursuit of a coveted Candidates spot.

For Arjun, the opening was the real test. But the 21-year-old made it look routine.

Out of a well-trodden Ruy Lopez line, he equalised comfortably, even tossing in a thematic pawn sacrifice to neutralise any pressure. When Wei Yi later returned the pawn, the position flattened completely, leading to a handshake and a 31-move draw.

Results Around The Tournament

The day was far tougher for Alexander Donchenko, whose dream run finally hit a wall. The German GM, in sparkling form until now, was outplayed by Uzbekistan's Nodirbek Yakubboev, who took full advantage of the white pieces to seize a crucial Game 1 win. If Yakubboev manages even a draw in the next game, he'll punch his ticket to the semifinals.

Elsewhere, Javokhir Sindarov of Uzbekistan and Mexico's Jose Eduardo Martinez Alcantara battled through a well-contested draw, with Sindarov never in serious danger.

In the final quarterfinal matchup, American GM Sam Shankland split the point with Russia's Andrey Esipenko after a balanced encounter.

With three matches still wide open and only Yakubboev inching toward the finish line, everything now hinges on Game 2, which will decide who stays in the hunt for the biggest prize outside the World Championship itself.
