Another Rift In Karnataka Congress, This Time Over Action Against Minority MLCs
A major political storm erupted within the Karnataka Congress after disciplinary action was taken against two MLCs who are also prominent minority leaders, triggering sharp divisions in the Siddaramaiah cabinet.
MLC Abdul Jabbar was suspended from the primary membership of the Congress on April 15 for alleged anti-party activities linked to the recent Davanagere South by-election. Party sources said Jabbar had been accused of working against the official candidate during the polls, with complaints from local leaders and reports submitted to the high command pointing to “sabotage" from within. At the same time, MLC Naseer Ahmed was removed from his position as Political Secretary to the Chief Minister, a move seen as part of the same disciplinary sweep.
While no formal public explanation detailed the full extent of the charges, insiders indicated that the action was meant to send a strong message against internal dissent and indiscipline.
The twin decisions, however, did not go uncontested.
The issue spilled into the cabinet, where a major disagreement broke out over both the timing and the manner of the action.
RDPR and IT Minister Priyank Kharge raised the matter, arguing that the steps taken against Jabbar and Naseer Ahmed were “hasty" and “harsh." He cautioned that such action could be perceived as targeting leaders from the minority community, which has traditionally backed the Congress, and warned of potential political fallout across the state.
Backing Kharge was Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao who said the party “should not take hasty decisions that could lose minority support." He questioned whether the implications of acting against both leaders had been fully considered.
Both leaders stressed that the optics of the decision could send the wrong signal to the Muslim community and there is already growing dissent.
This was met with fierce resistance from Ministers Eshwar Khandre and SS Mallikarjun, both from North Karnataka, and who were involved in the electioneering. Mallikarjun’s son Shamanth was given the ticket and the local Muslim leaders opposed, saying that a large chunk of the voters were minorities in Davangere South and then MLA Shamanur Shivashankarappa had promised to give a ticket to a Muslim the next time from the seat. The Davanagere by-election was necessitated after Shamanur’s demise recently.
Khandre and Mallikarjun opposed Kharge and Rao, maintaining that no individual is bigger than the party. They argued that discipline must be upheld irrespective of a leader’s background and that failure to act would weaken organisational authority. “A clear message has to go," was the sentiment expressed during the discussion.
Another senior Minister Satish Jarkiholi intervened, adding another dimension to the debate. He said he had personally spoken to Abdul Jabbar and that there was a growing perception among sections of the Muslim community that the action was being targeted and minority leaders. His remarks raised concerns about how the developments were being received on the ground with even the local Muslim leaders extremely disappointed and opposing the Congress at this point of time.
As the cabinet discussion intensified, the meeting turned increasingly tense. Ministers continued to press their positions, with Kharge and Rao reiterating their reservations, while Khandre and Mallikarjun stood firm on enforcing discipline.
The disagreement escalated to the point where both Mallikarjun and Khandre reportedly walked out of the meeting in the middle of the discussion. Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar also left the meeting midway, adding to the sense of increased internal discord.
