Another BLO Dies By Suicide In Bengal, Family Alleges SIR Work-Related Stress; Note Recovered

A woman working as a Booth Level Officer (BLO) in West Bengal's Nadia district was found dead at her house on Saturday morning. Her family alleged that she had been under significant work-related stress and died by suicide, police said.

The BLO, identified as Rinku Tarafdar, was found hanging from the ceiling in her room at her residence in the Bangaljhi area of Chapra in Krishnanagar, an officer stated. Police have recovered a suicide note.

The officer said, “The family is claiming that she was under immense pressure due to her SIR workload. We have recovered a note from her room. The body has been sent for postmortem. A necessary probe is underway."

Meanwhile, State minister Ujjal Biswas visited the deceased's home and spoke with her family.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has urged Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar to suspend the ongoing SIR in Bengal.

On Thursday, she wrote to the CEC, stating that the continuous “unplanned and coercive drive" could endanger more lives and undermine the legitimacy of the exercise.

Recent BLO Suicide Incidents

On Wednesday, another booth-level officer in Jalpaiguri district was found hanging. Her family claimed “unbearable SIR work pressure" was the cause of her death.

Earlier on Sunday, a BLO in Jaipur, identified as Mukesh Jangid (48), died by suicide after jumping in front of a train at the Bindayka railway crossing. Mukesh, who was posted on duty in the SIR area, reportedly rode his motorcycle to the railway tracks before taking the drastic step. Police recovered a suicide note from the spot in which he alleged harassment by certain officials.

Respective police teams have registered a case and launched an investigation into deaths.
