Andy Murray Spills It All: Brit Left 'Disappointed' After Coaching Novak Djokovic

Some dreams look better on paper. Well, that's Andy Murray's verdict anyway.

The Brit — who retired at the Paris Olympics in August 2024 — jumped headfirst into coaching just three months later, joining none other than Novak Djokovic's team.

Murray coaching his old rival and a 24-time Grand Slam machine sounded like a tennis rom-com waiting to happen. Instead, it lasted roughly as long as a limited-edition Nike drop.

The partnership kicked off in November 2024 and fizzled out six months later — covering the Australian Open and three other tournaments.

Still, Murray insists it was worth it.

“I look back on it and I'm glad that I did it," he told The Tennis Podcast. “It didn't last long, but I put everything into it."

The campaign started brightly. Djokovic fought past Carlos Alcaraz to reach the Australian Open semifinals — only to tear his left hamstring mid-run. He retired after one set against Alexander Zverev and, in classic Melbourne fashion, was booed off the court.

What followed was a cocktail of rust and bad luck: early exits in Qatar and Indian Wells, and a Miami Open final loss to teenage upstart Jakub Mensik.

“I was disappointed. Probably didn't get the results I would have liked for him," Murray admitted, though he also called it a valuable coaching crash-course.

The plan was to team up until Roland Garros, but early clay losses in Monte Carlo and Madrid brought the curtain down in May.

“It was going well initially… After the injury, it was a difficult few months for him and the team," Murray said. “I learned a lot about what coaching is."

Now retired — and enjoying the same — Murray says he has zero regrets.

“I know it was the right decision to stop when I did. I don't regret when I retired from tennis."
