A shocking incident from Andhra Pradesh has raised serious concerns about the safety of gig workers after a routine food delivery turned into a near-fatal experience for a Swiggy delivery agent. The incident reportedly occurred at Anantapur railway station when the delivery agent boarded a train to deliver a food order placed by a passenger.
Food delivery platforms such as Swiggy and Zomato allow train passengers to order meals by entering their PNR number, enabling partner restaurants at stations along the route to fulfil the request. While the service definitely offers convenience to travellers, this incident highlights the hidden risks faced by delivery agents. They often operate under “tight timelines and unclear safety protocols."
Swiggy Delivery Agent Falls On Platform While Delivering Food
The incident occurred when a delivery agent boarded the Prashanti Express to deliver a food order at Anantapur railway station. A passenger travelling in the first AC compartment had placed the order through Swiggy using the train delivery feature.
According to reports, the train halted for just one to two minutes. The delivery agent managed to enter the AC compartment and hand over the food to the passenger. But before he could safely deboard, the train started moving. In the rush to get down, the delivery agent fell from the moving train onto the platform.
A video of the incident surfaced online that shows a delivery agent trying to get down from the train, which picked up speed. He then falls on the platform.
Questions Raised Over Safety, Responsibility And Train Halts
The visuals left many viewers shocked and sparked widespread reactions on social media.
One user commented, “Trains in India tolerate hour-long delays yet deny a five-minute halt at Tier-3 stations, a stark contradiction in operational priorities."
Another said, “This really shows the incredible risks gig workers take for our everyday convenience. That Swiggy delivery person was under so much pressure from a tight timeline that he took a dangerous chance. It makes you appreciate the risks behind a simple delivery."
“Why could the customer not come on gate to take the order? Swiggy/Zomato should restrict the deliveries inside the train, if someone needs the food, he should come on gate," someone else pointed out.
“This is terrifying and unacceptable. No delivery is worth a human life. Clear accountability is needed—from the platform, the passenger, and the railway authorities. Strict rules must stop deliveries on moving trains before someone gets killed," a person demanded.
“Risked his life for a food delivery—near-death just for a 2-min halt. These train handovers need strict regulation ASAP. What are the safety measures ensured by the company, and what kind of compensation is promised in case of any unforeseen issues? These guys gamble with death daily to feed families—heroes deserve better protection, not incentives alone. Who's fixing this?" read another comment.
Swiggy's Response
As the video continued to circulate online, Swiggy issued a response addressing the incident. The company said, “Hi there, we've looked into the incident and are relieved to confirm that the delivery partner is safe, unharmed, and did not face any penalty from authorities. Safety is our absolute priority. Our protocols strictly prohibit boarding or exiting moving trains."
The company further stated that it has strengthened its safety training to ensure delivery partners clearly understand and follow protocols which reduce the risk of such incidents in the future.
