Under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme (ABSS), the Ministry of Railways has taken up the massive task of modernising over 1,300 railway stations nationwide. In West Bengal alone, 101 stations are currently undergoing redevelopment, with the total project cost estimated at approximately Rs 3,600 crore.
The Amrit Bharat Station Scheme (ABSS), launched in late 2022, is Indian Railways' initiative to redevelop over 1,300 stations into modern, future-ready transport hubs. The scheme focuses on better passenger amenities, sustainable infrastructure, local heritage integration and improved city connectivity, with upgraded facilities such as waiting halls, toilets, Wi-Fi, food courts, signage, parking and pedestrian access.
1. The redevelopment focuses on bringing modern railway infrastructure to metropolitan cities, district headquarters, industrial towns, pilgrimage centres and strategically important border regions across West Bengal.
2. Major stations including Adra, Alipurduar, Andal, Asansol, Bandel, Barddhaman, Barrackpore, Bolpur Shantiniketan, Chandpara, Digha, Howrah, Jalpaiguri, Kharagpur, Kolkata, Malda Town, New Jalpaiguri, Purulia, Rampurhat, Ranaghat, Santragachi, Sealdah, Shalimar and Siliguri are being upgraded under a unified development vision.
3. The wide geographical spread of these stations highlights that development is being delivered not just in big cities but also across districts, towns and border areas.
4. New Jalpaiguri, with a sanctioned cost of about Rs 335 crore, is being transformed into a modern gateway to the North East with new terminals, an air concourse and upgraded platforms.
5. Santragachi railway station, with an investment of around Rs 380 crore, is emerging as a major multi-modal hub aimed at easing congestion on the Howrah–Kolkata corridor.
6. Asansol railway station is being redeveloped at an estimated cost of Rs 431 crore as a modern rail hub serving the industrial belt of western Bengal.
7. Once completed, the 101 upgraded stations are expected to become important centres of regional economic activity.
The stations identified for redevelopment in the state include Adra, Alipur Duar Junction, Aluabari Road, Ambika Kalna, Anara, Andal Junction, Andul, Asansol Junction, Azimganj, Bagnan, Bally, Balurghat, Bandel Junction, Bangaon Junction, Bankura, Barabhum, Barasat, Barddhaman, Barrackpore, Belda, Berhampore Court, Bethuadahari, Bhaluka Road, Binnaguri, Bishnupur, Bolpur Shantiniketan, Burnpur, Canning, Chandannagar, Chandpara, Chandrakona Road, Dalgaon, Dalkhola, Dankuni, Dhulian Ganga, Dhupguri, Digha, Dinhata, Dum Dum Junction, Falakata, Garbeta, Gede, Haldia, Haldibari, Harishchandrapur, Hasimara, Hijli, Howrah Junction, Jalpaiguri, Jalpaiguri Road, Jangipur Road, Jhalida, Jhargram.
