Union Home Minister Amit Shah has approved legal action against those linked to singer Zubeen Garg's death in Singapore. This sanction under BNSS Section 208 allows prosecution for crimes committed abroad. The Assam government plans to file a charge sheet by December 10, 2025. Garg's 53rd birthday was celebrated across Assam with various events.

Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma informed that Union Home Minister Amit Shah has granted the required sanction under Section 208 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) to proceed against the accused linked to singer Zubeen Garg's death in Singapore.

He explained that Section 208 of the BNSS, in simple terms, states that if a crime is committed outside India, the case can be taken up by the court only after the Central government grants prior sanction.

Sarma wrote on X, “Today marks the 53rd birthday of our beloved Zubeen Garg — a day that reminds us of his music, his voice, and his irreplaceable place in Assam's heart. On this very day, Union Home Minister Amit Shah has granted the required sanction under Section 208 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) to proceed against the accused linked to Zubeen's death in Singapore. Section 208 of BNSS, in simple language, says: If a crime is committed outside India, the case can be taken up by the court only after the Central government gives prior sanction. This sanction is therefore a crucial legal step, allowing us to file a charge sheet and move forward firmly and lawfully for trial of the case. We remain fully committed to filing the chargesheet against the accused persons within 10th of December 2025.”

The 53rd birth anniversary of Assam's cultural icon Zubeen Garg was observed across the state on Tuesday. In the morning, a 20-kg cake was brought to Garg's Kahilipara home, where a bust of the artist was unveiled, drawing an emotional crowd of hundreds.

Fans have been flocking to Zubeen Kshetra, where the singer was cremated. Political parties and various organisations have also lined up a series of programmes to mark Garg's 53rd birth anniversary. The ruling BJP is organising 53 blood donation camps across the state as part of a statewide drive. The Opposition Congress held a commemorative event titled “Kanchanjunga — Sanskriti Houk Maitreyir Mantra” to honour Garg's memory and celebrate his cultural contributions.

Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) observed the day as Jatiya Swabhiman Diwas, organising a tribute ceremony at its headquarters with a blood donation camp, renditions of Garg's songs, and sapling plantation.

The All Assam Students' Union (AASU) has launched a three-day programme across all district headquarters since Sunday, organising art camps, cycle rallies and sapling plantation.

Garg died on September 19 this year in Singapore, where he had travelled to participate in the North East India Festival (NEIF), under mysterious circumstances. Protests and demands seeking justice for the singer continue. The Assam Police Special Investigation Team (SIT) is probing his death.Add as a Reliable and Trusted News Source Add Now!
