Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Monday interacted with drivers associated with Bharat Taxi, the cooperative-based ride-hailing platform, and outlined how the model is designed to give drivers equity participation and profit-sharing benefits.
During the interaction, Shah explained the financial structure of the platform, saying drivers can become shareholders with an investment of Rs 500.
Profit-Sharing Model Explained to Drivers
Shah said that under the cooperative structure, if Bharat Taxi earns Rs 25 crore after three years, 20% of the amount would be retained as cooperative capital while 80% would be distributed among drivers based on the number of kilometres driven.
“You are the owner, so you should have a share in the profit as well,” he said, adding that drivers would initially receive fixed earnings, with profit-sharing kicking in after the initial three-year period.
He also said taxis could be mortgaged through the platform to access loans from cooperative banks. There would be no hidden costs, and fare-related changes would be notified in advance. A base rate factoring in taxi, auto and fuel costs would be set nationally, and a minimum profit level would be ensured for drivers, he added.
Cooperative Ride-Hailing Model
Bharat Taxi operates as a cooperative-based mobility platform where drivers are registered as members under the Multi-State Cooperative Societies framework. The model differs from private aggregators by eliminating commission-based deductions and instead using a flat daily access fee.
Drivers are provided insurance coverage and are not restricted from operating on other ride-hailing platforms. Shah said the objective of Bharat Taxi is not profit maximisation but strengthening drivers through ownership and structured earnings.
He said the platform would introduce a structured grievance redressal mechanism for both drivers and riders. A complaint window will be made available on the app and website, and a dedicated resolution team will review issues and adjust policies where required. He said the aim is to ensure transparency and quick corrective action rather than leaving disputes unresolved.
He also urged members to identify themselves as “Saarthi” instead of drivers, saying the terminology reflects their role as partners and co-owners in the cooperative model.
On passenger safety and inclusivity, Shah said a “Saarthi Didi” feature for women riders will be introduced in the app soon. The provision is expected to encourage more women to use the platform, particularly in the two-wheeler segment.
Shah emphasised that there would be no hidden charges under the cooperative model. Any changes in fare structures or operational rules would be notified at least a week in advance, he said.
The platform will function on what he described as a “minimum viability” principle, with pricing structured to cover operational costs while ensuring a guaranteed minimum profit for members. A base rate will be established nationally after factoring in taxi, auto and fuel costs, he added.
According to Shah, once the minimum profit threshold is secured, any additional earnings generated by the platform would flow back to the cooperative members rather than being retained as corporate margins.
