In written testimony to Congress last month, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth praised Japan and Australia for understanding the need to increase defense spending. He called South Korea a “model ally” for committing to the new global standard for defense spending and taking a more active role in defending against North Korea. Beijing has denounced the multilateral exercises as groundless provocation. “The last thing the region needs is division and confrontation as a result of the introduction of external forces,” a Foreign Ministry spokesman said. Chinese forces recently conducted live-fire drills and held patrols near the Philippines, China’s state-run Global Times reported.
