Amazon MGM Studios turns to AI to cut costs and speed up film and TV production

Amazon MGM Studios is rolling out new artificial intelligence tools to streamline filmmaking and television production. Led by veteran executive Albert Cheng, the initiative aims to reduce costs, accelerate workflows, and expand creative possibilities while keeping human creators at the centre of the process.
Amazon is preparing to use artificial intelligence to fundamentally speed up how films and television shows are made, even as concerns ripple through Hollywood about job losses and long term disruption. The company believes AI can help manage soaring production budgets while enabling studios to take more creative risks and produce a wider slate of content.
At the centre of this push is Amazon MGM Studio's new AI Studio, a specialised unit launched in August 2025. The team is led by Albert Cheng, a seasoned entertainment executive who is tasked with building AI tools that can streamline the creative pipeline and lower costs. Amazon plans to open a closed beta of these tools in March 2026, inviting select industry partners to test them, with initial results expected a couple of months later by May.
Cheng describes the AI Studio as a startup within Amazon, operating under Jeff Bezos's well-known two-pizza team philosophy. The group is deliberately kept small, made up largely of engineers and scientists, supported by a lean creative and business team. This structure reflects Amazon's belief that focused teams can move faster and innovate more effectively, especially when tackling complex challenges like integrating AI into filmmaking.
The move comes at a time when production budgets across the entertainment industry have ballooned, making it harder for studios to greenlight new projects or take creative risks. According to Cheng, the high cost of creation limits both volume and experimentation. AI, he argues, offers a way to accelerate parts of the process without replacing the human creativity that defines storytelling. The goal is not automation for its own sake, but efficiency that frees creators to focus on ideas and execution.
Still, the broader adoption of AI has sparked anxiety among actors and creators. High profile performers such as Emily Blunt have publicly voiced fears that AI could threaten jobs or even replace performers entirely. Amazon has sought to address these concerns by emphasising that writers, directors, actors, and designers will remain involved at every stage of production. AI is positioned as an assistive tool rather than a substitute for human talent.
Amazon's AI ambitions also reflect a wider company-wide push. Like many large technology firms, Amazon is urging teams across divisions to identify meaningful uses for AI. The company has pointed to efficiency gains from AI as one factor behind significant corporate layoffs since October, including job cuts within Prime Video. This context adds to the sensitivity surrounding AI adoption in creative industries.
From a practical standpoint, Cheng believes AI can help solve some of the most stubborn challenges in large-scale film and television production. The AI Studio is developing tools that bridge what he calls the final gap between consumer-grade AI and the precise control filmmakers require. These tools aim to improve character consistency across scenes, support seamless integration with industry-standard software, and give directors finer control over AI-generated elements.
Amazon is drawing heavily on Amazon Web Services for technical support and plans to work with multiple large language model providers. This approach is designed to give creators flexibility across both pre-production and post-production workflows. Protecting intellectual property is a core priority, with safeguards intended to ensure AI-generated content is not reused or absorbed into other models without consent.
To test and refine its tools, the AI Studio is collaborating with experienced creators, including producer Robert Stromberg and his company Secret City, actor Kunal Nayyar and Good Karma Productions, and animator Colin Brady, who has worked with Pixar and ILM.
The studio has already pointed to a real-world example of how this approach could evolve. For the second season of the biblical series House of David, director Jon Erwin used AI combined with live action footage to create large-scale battle scenes. By blending the two seamlessly, the production expanded the scope of its visuals while keeping costs under control.
As Amazon continues its experiment, the company is betting that carefully applied AI can help reshape production economics without sacrificing creative integrity. Whether Hollywood ultimately embraces this balance remains to be seen, but Amazon is clearly positioning itself at the forefront of that shift.Add as a Reliable and Trusted News Source Add Now!
