Amazon India units rein in costs to trim FY25 losses, growth ticks up
Amazon's India business units reduced their losses in financial year 2025 by reining in their expenses, even as revenue growth remained moderate compared with the Covid years.
This comes at a time when the American ecommerce giant is trying to catch up in the quick commerce race in India. Amazon Now, its quick commerce venture, is a recent entrant into the highly competitive market.
All the four major business units of Amazon India—marketplace entity Amazon Seller Services, logistics arm Amazon Transport Services, Amazon Wholesale and fintech unit Amazon Pay—reported a significant drop in FY25 loss, primarily due to a reduction in advertising expenses and employee costs.
Amazon did not respond to ET's queries till press time Thursday.
Core business
For Amazon Seller Services, revenue from operations rose 19% from the year before to Rs 30,139 crore in FY25, compared with 14% growth in FY24. While the growth rate has improved from 3% in FY23, it is much lower than the pandemic years, when the business expanded 49% in FY21 and 32% in FY22.
The trends are similar for its largest Indian competitor, Flipkart. The Walmart-backed ecommerce company is also focusing on profitability as it gears up for an initial public offering in 2026. ET reported on September 29 that most of its group entities narrowed losses in 2024-25 by cutting back on expenses, even as revenue growth was muted.
“The overall ecommerce sector growth for FY25 was 15-20% and Amazon India managed to make the most out of this slow growth year by controlling its expenses to optimise its results,” said Satish Meena, founder of ecommerce tracking platform Datum Intelligence.
Amazon Seller Services' loss narrowed to nearly a tenth from the year before to Rs 374 crore, as the company tightened its costs. The revenue growth was boosted by an increase in marketplace services and advertising revenue.
Other units
Amazon Transport Service (ATS) posted 8% growth in revenue from operations to Rs 5,284 crore. With only a marginal increase in expenses, FY25 loss narrowed to less than half at Rs 33.9 crore from Rs 80.3 crore the prior year.
ET in June reported that ATS was merging with Amazon Seller Services to reduce legal and regulatory compliance requirements and manage the infrastructure and other resources of the two companies better.
ATS was set up in 2013 as an in-house logistics arm for the ecommerce marketplace and derives more than 95% of its revenue from Amazon. In 2023, the company opened its logistics services to third-party clients as well.
Amazon Wholesale India and Amazon Pay posted a fall in revenue in FY25.
For Amazon Wholesale India, revenue from operations dropped 16% to Rs 2,993.9 crore. It still managed to trim losses by more than a third to Rs 220 crore from Rs 344 crore in FY24, by reducing its employee benefit expenses and other costs like advertising and sales promotion.
Amazon Pay reported an almost 9% drop in its standalone revenue from operations to Rs 2,096 crore. Its losses narrowed to Rs 865 crore from Rs 911 crore.
Amazon Pay, meanwhile, strengthened its financial play in the country in FY25, securing the non-banking lending licence through the acquisition of digital lending startup Axio. From payment aggregator to mobile wallet, Amazon has all the major operating licences in India.

Expenses picking up
In June, Amazon India said it would invest Rs 2,000 crore this year to expand and upgrade its operating infrastructure in order to make ecommerce deliveries “faster and more reliable”. This investment also comes at a time when Amazon India is expanding its quick commerce arm Amazon Now.
In a conversation with ET in August, Amazon India country manager Samir Kumar said that the company will not hold back on investing in quick commerce business, a segment that requires high cash burn to gain market share.
Flipkart is also making fresh investments in quick commerce service Flipkart Minutes and Myntra's rapid delivery arm M-Now. It is likely to weigh on the Walmart-owned etailer's profits, executives said.
