Amazon, Flipkart to begin festive sales from September 23
Ecommerce majors Amazon India and Flipkart Friday said their annual festive sales will begin this year on September 23, a day after changes in goods and services tax (GST) rates come into force.
Early preview of Amazon India's Great Indian Festival sale and Flipkart's The Big Billion Day sale show offers across categories including home and furniture, electronics, appliances, mobiles, television, groceries, fashion and more.
The GST cut in categories including footwear and apparels (up to Rs 2,500), handbags, chocolates, namkeens and appliances like television are expected to boost demand in the festive sales.
According to analysts, sales will start after the new GST rates have been implemented to make the most out of the surge in shopping.
ET reported on Thursday that festive online sales will grow 30% over 2024 following the GST rate cuts. This will surpass the earlier expectation of a 27% year-on-year jump at Rs 1.2 lakh crore.
Though the platforms have not shared the festive sale deals and offers on their websites, a quick look on Amazon's website shows ‘8 PM deals', ‘trending deals', ‘top deals' and more across categories. It also has brands including Fastrack, Samsung, HP and Asus, among others. The website also features prices starting from as low as Rs 49 for some categories.
Subscriptions push
Amazon India has announced that its sale will be unlocked 24 hours early for the Prime members, while Flipkart said its Plus and Black members will get early access to the sale.
Flipkart's Black is a premium subscription programme that the Walmart-backed company launched ahead of the festive season. Besides early access to sale, it offers exclusive deals on gadgets, free YouTube premium annual subscription and flight cancellation on Cleartrip for just Re 1. The annual membership is available for Rs 1,499 and there is an early bird offer price of Rs 990 for a month since launch.
Ahead of its mid-year Prime Day sales, Amazon also tweaked its programme offering tiered memberships like Prime Lite (Rs 799 annually) and Prime Shopping Edition (Rs 399 annually) to boost adoption. After tiering, Amazon saw around 70% of new Prime sign-ups during the Prime Day sale from smaller towns.
The festive season is the largest consumption period for India, making up 30-40% of annual sales for categories such as apparel and electronics. Online retailers such as Myntra, Ajio, Tata Cliq and Meesho are yet to announce their festive sale dates.
On September 4, ET reported that Myntra has raised its platform fee to Rs 25, while Flipkart and Amazon India are charging a Rs 5 marketplace fee on all orders. People aware of the matter said Myntra's increase is part of an ongoing experiment ahead of the festive rush.
