Almost A World Champion! Gurpreet Singh Wins Hard-Fought Silver At ISSF World Championships
Olympian Gurpreet Singh came agonisingly close to becoming world champion in the men's 25m Centre Fire Pistol event, but missed out on gold by the slimmest of margins to Ukraine's Pavlo Korostylov at the Olympic Shooting Range.
This marks Gurpreet's second individual World Championship medal, adding to the silver he won in the 25m Standard Pistol at Changwon in 2018. Yann Pierre Louis Fridrici of France claimed bronze.
A Brilliant Fightback Falls Just Short
Gurpreet's total score of 584-18x over two days came after a remarkable comeback. Sitting ninth after the precision stage with 288-8x (95, 97, 96), he produced a superb rapid-fire round of 296-10x (98, 99, 99) to surge into medal contention and ultimately claim silver.
Korostylov, however, edged him out with 29 inner 10s and a perfect 100 in the final rapid series. The Ukrainian had already led after the precision stage with 291-14x, and his consistency carried him to gold.
Mixed Fortunes for the Indian Contingent
Harpreet Singh, second after precision with 291-10x, slipped to ninth after a disappointing 286-6x in rapid. Sahil Choudhary finished 28th with 561-14x, and the Indian trio ended fifth in the team standings.
Elsewhere, India's campaign featured gold medals from Samrat Rana (10m Air Pistol) and Ravinder Singh (50m Standard Pistol, 10m Air Pistol Team).
Silver medals went to Aishwary Pratap Singh Tomar, Anish Bhanwala, Gurpreet, Esha Singh, Samrat Rana, and multiple team events.
Bronzes were secured by Esha, Elavenil Valarivan, Varun Tomar, and the women's air rifle team.
