Budget week begins on a data-heavy note, with the Economic Survey 2026 set to be tabled in Parliament on January 29. The report, presented by Chief Economic Adviser V Anantha Nageswaran, will offer the government's official assessment of where the economy stands, and where it may be headed, just days before the Union Budget.
For markets, policymakers and industry, the Survey is the first real signal of the government's macro thinking ahead of Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman's Budget speech on February 1.
Parliament timing and context
The Survey will be presented at 11 am during the ongoing Budget Session of Parliament. The session began on January 28 with a joint address by President Droupadi Murmu and is scheduled to run until April 2, as earlier indicated by Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju.
What the Economic Survey covers
Prepared by the Department of Economic Affairs under the Ministry of Finance, the Economic Survey reviews economic developments over the past year and assesses key macro indicators. These include GDP growth, inflation trends, employment signals, trade performance and the government's fiscal position. It also flags risks and medium-term challenges facing the economy.
While it does not announce policy measures, the Survey often frames the themes and priorities that later appear in the Budget.

How projections have stacked up so far
In recent years, actual growth has frequently exceeded Economic Survey projections. For FY26, the economy is estimated to grow 7.4 percent based on the First Advance Estimates, well above the 6.3-6.8 percent range projected in the pre-Budget Survey.
For FY25, growth came in at 6.5 percent, broadly matching the Survey's 6.5–7 percent estimate. In FY24, GDP growth surged to 9.2 percent, far exceeding the Survey's projection of 6–6.8 percent.

The Economic Survey presentation can be watched live on Sansad TV and Doordarshan news channels. Official online streams linked to Parliament proceedings will also carry the event. Updates will be shared through government platforms, including the Finance Ministry and PIB social media handles.
How to download the Economic Survey 2026
Once tabled, the full Economic Survey 2026 report will be released online. The PDF will be available on the official Union Budget website, indiabudget.gov.in, shortly after the presentation.
Key dates this Budget week
January 29 marks the first major milestone of the Budget Session, with the Union Budget to follow on February 1. The session is scheduled to conclude on April 2, closing a critical phase of Parliament's economic agenda.
