View: Alcaraz leaves nest, steps into tennis adulthood

Spectacular as his career has been, the Spanish Superstar is still only 22 and has never had another confidant to lean on. Ferrero wasn't just the man refining his on-court game; he was the father figure shaping all the decision-making in Alcaraz's professional life.
“I have three kids at home, and he is the fourth”.
Emotion and sport are intertwined. A couple of years ago, when Juan Carlos Ferrero used this pithy sentence to describe his relationship with Carlos Alcaraz, it tugged at the most cynical of hearts. Ferrero, a former world No. 1, first saw Alcaraz as a 14-year-old in 2017. He knew immediately that Alcaraz was unique, playing with a joie de vivre that floored the 2003 French Open champion.
A year later, their partnership began formally — Alcaraz, the generational teen talent, and Ferrero, the 38-year-old seasoned guide and mentor. Seven years on, having won 24 titles including six Grand Slams and risen to the top of the world rankings tree, their relationship is over with another outpouring of emotion.
“Thank you for turning childhood dreams into realities,” gushed Alcaraz. “Thank you, Carlos, for the trust, the effort, and for making your way of competing make me feel so special,” responded Ferrero. Even as the inevitable speculation gobbles up media space about just why the pair have gone their separate ways, especially as Ferrero signed off his statement with, “I wish I could have continued”, the gaze on Alcaraz will now be sharper than ever.
Spectacular as his career has been, the Spanish Superstar is still only 22 and has never had another confidant to lean on. Ferrero wasn't just the man refining his on-court game; he was the father figure shaping all the decision-making in Alcaraz's professional life.
In a revealing Netflix docuseries series, the pair were seen at loggerheads when Alcaraz insisted on going to Ibiza after winning the French Open in 2024 even as Ferrero vehemently opposed the indulgence. The jostle was understandable – a young man wanting to celebrate his hard-earned success versus his staunchest ally – eager to ensure he does not squander even an ounce of his precious ability. Now, attention turns to how the world No. 1 will navigate the weeks and months to come.
The Australian Open, the only Slam Alcaraz hasn't won, in fact never even gone past the quarterfinal at, is less than a month away. Alcaraz will have to attempt to climb that mountain without the comforting presence of the forever man in his corner, even as he attempts to build a working relationship with a new coach. In moments of frustration and uncertainty, he will hear an unfamiliar voice. On the training court, he will have to learn to embrace a new method of instruction.
Yet, even as this mouth-watering storyline will spark the chatter in the tennis world in the short term, this new reality may well unlock layers in his game that Alcaraz would not have known existed. Elite sport is littered with examples of athletes that have parted ways with longstanding coaches and mentors and prospered from the discomfort of that outcome. New recruits challenge established norms, refresh training methods, identify approaching banana peels and upend structures that have been in place for years.
From the debris of this refresh, quite often an all-new version of the athlete emerges — more skilled and stronger than before. Alcaraz, already on his way to legendary status, will be counting on his new coach to fuel such an overhaul — one he does not seemingly need on the circuit he dominates, but one that Ferrero's exit has forced upon him
When Alcaraz stunned the world by rising to world No. 1 as a 19-year-old, Ferrero had said, matter-of-fact, “It's a surprise to everyone, except to me because I train with him every day and I know what he can do.” Now, as the ward he chiseled into a modernday athletic colossus prepares to script the next phase of his remarkable career, Ferrero will watch from the sidelines. And invisible to the world, will almost certainly let out a “Vamos” when his fourth kid pulls off his next jawdropping feat.
