Ajit Pawar’s ‘corrupt demon’ jab at BJP triggers storm within Mahayuti alliance in Maharashtra
Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar's accusation of the BJP as a "corrupt demon" has ignited a political storm within the ruling Mahayuti alliance. Maharashtra BJP president Ravindra Chavan expressed prior reservations about inducting Ajit Pawar's faction, citing cadre unhappiness.
Mumbai: A remark by Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar describing the Bharatiya Janata Party as a "corrupt demon" has triggered a political storm within the ruling Mahayuti alliance, with the BJP hitting back sharply. Maharashtra BJP president Ravindra Chavan has said he had privately urged Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis not to induct Ajit Pawar into the alliance.
"When the NCP (Ajit faction) joined, I repeatedly told Devendraji to rethink the decision because our cadres in Pimpri Chinchwad and Pune were unhappy," Chavan said while campaigning for party candidates in the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal polls.
Although Chavan did not name Ajit Pawar directly, the target of his remarks was evident. His comments came after Ajit Pawar, while campaigning in Pimpri Chinchwad on Friday, accused the BJP-run civic administration of large-scale corruption.
"There is no transparency in the municipal administration and there is no oversight at the state level. In cities, there are gangs indulging in open loot, and we have decided to enter the electoral fray to destroy this corrupt demon," Ajit Pawar said, also accusing the BJP of having a "demonic hunger" for corruption.
Though the BJP, Shiv Sena, and NCP (Ajit Pawar) are allies in the state government, the BJP is contesting the Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad civic polls alone. Ajit Pawar, meanwhile, has allied with the NCP (Sharad Pawar faction), putting him in direct contest with the BJP in both cities.
Addressing a press conference earlier, Chavan warned Ajit Pawar against escalating the confrontation. "We need to decide what kind of allegations should be made, considering we are in an alliance. If we start responding, he will face many problems. He should be aware of that," he said.
The BJP has previously accused Ajit Pawar of corruption, including alleged involvement in the Rs 70,000-crore irrigation scam.
Questioning Ajit Pawar's comments, Chavan asked, "He needs to clarify which party he is referring to. Is he talking about the party led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi? Or the party working under Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis?"
15,931 candidates in fray for polls to 29 municipal bodies
A record 15,931 candidates for 2,869 seats in 893 electoral panels are in the fray for the elections to the 29 municipal corporations across Maharashtra slated for January 15.According to the State Election Commission (SEC), a total of 33,427 nominations were received, of which 24,771 were declared valid after scrutiny, while 8,840 withdrew their nominations on January 2. Ultimately, 15,931 candidates are contesting the elections.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) remains the largest battlefield with 227 seats and 1,700 final candidates.
