AIMIM steps out of Hyderabad, alters poll math beyond its scale
The All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) continues to maintain its primary organizational base in Hyderabad and Telangana. The party has a significant presence in the city with seven Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs), two Members of the Legislative Council (MLCs), 67 municipal corporators, and 70 councillors.
NEW DELHI: Asaduddin Owaisi-led All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM), long confined to Hyderabad's Old City, is steadily expanding beyond its traditional base, emerging as a minority-focused political force across multiple states. Its recent performance in Maharashtra's municipal polls - winning 126 corporator seats across 13 municipal corporations - has pushed the party into sharper national focus, underscoring how a limited footprint can still command outsized political attention.
Footprint; Urban Focus
Hyderabad remains AIMIM's organisational core, with seven MLAs, two MLCs, 67 municipal corporators and 70 councillors in Telangana. Beyond the state, the party holds five MLAs in Bihar and has made sustained efforts to build an urban base elsewhere. In Maharashtra, AIMIM's 126 corporator seats placed it nearly three times ahead of the NCP (SP) and just about 30 seats behind Shiv Sena (UBT), despite internal churn and leadership exits. The party also secured the Malegaon Central seat in the 2024 Maharashtra assembly elections, reinforcing its focus on minority-dominated urban pockets.
Shaping narratives, Calculus
AIMIM's rise has unfolded alongside BJP's post-2014 expansion, often intersecting in ways that reshape electoral arithmetic. In the 2025 Delhi assembly elections, AIMIM failed to open its account but polled 33,474 votes in Mustafabad, a constituency with nearly 40% Muslim population. The vote split among opposition parties enabled BJP's Mohan Singh Bisht to win by 17,578 votes, making AIMIM a decisive factor despite finishing third.
A similar pattern was visible in Uttar Pradesh's 2022 assembly elections, where AIMIM contested selectively. In at least seven constituencies, including Bijnor and Moradabad Nagar, its vote share exceeded BJP's margin of victory over the SP-led alliance, indirectly aiding BJP wins. Political analysts argue that AIMIM's entry, even without victories, changes the poll narrative, forces opposition parties to recalibrate strategies and sharpens religious consolidation on both sides.
Owaisi: Orator and Face
At the centre of AIMIM's expansion is Asaduddin Owaisi, whose blend of populist street rhetoric and parliamentary sharpness has made him the most visible Muslim leader outside the Congress fold. His speeches resonate strongly among urban and semi-urban voters, particularly sections with limited formal education, where he is viewed as an aspirational voice.
In Parliament, Owaisi routinely targets both BJP and Congress on minority rights, citizenship laws and urban governance. He has also built a national profile through international parliamentary outreach, including engagement with Islamic nations following Operation Sindoor, projecting himself as a representative voice of Indian Muslims. Together with AIMIM's expanding footprint, his visibility has turned the party into a strategic disruptor, influencing outcomes and debates far beyond Hyderabad.
