Ahmedabad maps 2030 Commonwealth Games as launchpad for 2036 Olympic bid

Ahmedabad is accelerating infrastructure development, including the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Sports Enclave, following its selection to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games. This ambitious push is also a strategic step towards a potential bid for the 2036 Olympic Games, aiming to transform the city into India's sporting hub.
With the Commonwealth Sport General Assembly formally awarding Ahmedabad the 2030 Commonwealth Games, the Ahmedabad–Gandhinagar region has kicked off a rapid infrastructure push designed not just to deliver the event but to position the city for an ambitious leap: a bid for the 2036 Olympic Games.
As per a TOI report, officials say the clearance has set off an accelerated schedule across key venues, led by the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Sports Enclave (SVPSE) and the Police Academy Sports Hub—two centrepiece projects that will anchor Gujarat's long-term sporting blueprint.
Speaking from Glasgow after the announcement, Gujarat principal secretary (sports, youth and cultural activities) Ashwani Kumar said the city is on track to become India's sporting nerve centre. “The construction of the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Sports Enclave (SVPSE) and the Police Academy Sports Hub will begin in April 2026 and finish by late 2028 or early 2029,” he said. He added that funding had already been secured and that “most venues for the 2030 Games are ready.” An organising committee, he said, “will be constituted within a month.”
Compact, high-intensity games
Unlike multi-state formats seen in earlier events, the 2030 CWG will be highly concentrated within the Ahmedabad–Gandhinagar corridor. This “compactness cuts athlete travel time and allows seamless integration of metro, BRTS and electric mobility,” according to the bid document, . Only cycling events at the Statue of Unity and women's cricket in Vadodara fall outside the main cluster. The SVPSE will serve as the Games' central hub, with facilities ranging from aquatic centres to athlete villages. The Karai Police Academy will host athletics, shooting and multiple high-performance disciplines. The Narendra Modi Stadium will stage the opening and closing ceremonies, slated to be among the largest ever produced at a Commonwealth Games.
Beyond 2030, the government plans to push year-round utilisation with high-performance labs, community sports zones, university-linked facilities, and pathways to develop talent in less-mainstream sports such as netball, lawn bowls, kabaddi and yogasana.
Sustainability and demand boom
Ahmedabad also intends to foreground sustainability, diversity and inclusion at CHOGM meetings in 2026 and 2028. Local business leaders expect the Games to reshape the city's economy.“Hosting the CWG will be a game changer for Ahmedabad. The city's infrastructure will see a drastic change with improved roads and connectivity. It will create demand for around 20,000 star-category hotel rooms and boost hotel and retail development. It will also eventually bring new migration to the city, resulting in increased housing demand,” said Tejas Joshi, president of Credai Gujarat.
Current accommodation stock includes around 5,420 rooms in the 3–5 star segment, with another 3,000 in the pipeline—1,500 of them in the 5-star category. Upgraded university hostels will double as athlete accommodation during the Games and switch back to student use afterward.
Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport, which handles 13.4 million passengers annually, is slated to open a new terminal by 2026, doubling capacity and adding e-gates and self-service kiosks.
Eye on the 2036 Olympics
For city planners, the 2030 CWG is just the starting point. “World-class sports academies will be set up, encouraging a sports culture among city youths. After the Commonwealth Games, Ahmedabad aims to host the 2036 Olympics. The next decade will bring historic developments to the city,” said Joshi.Gujarat's sports ecosystem has seen a massive expansion: the state's sports budget has grown from ₹2.5 crore two decades ago to ₹521 crore today. Talent-building programmes like Khel Mahakumbh—which drew seven million participants—and schemes such as Shaktidoot are being scaled up to strengthen athlete pipelines.
Public engagement is central to the plan. Initiatives like will convert riverfronts and parks into fitness zones, while —pedestrian-friendly open-street events—will be expanded. The state aims to train 10,000 volunteers and create over 30,000 Games-linked jobs by 2030, supported by NSS and NCC youth ambassadors.
The road to CWG 2030
A year-long, step-by-step process led to the final approval — from India receiving the letter of intent in January 2025 to a series of inspections, technical meetings and bid presentations, culminating in the November 26 confirmation by the Commonwealth Sport General Assembly.Where the action will be
The Games will be spread across a network of planned and existing facilities, including the Sports Authority of India Training Centre for hockey; Gujarat Police Academy for athletics, shooting and rugby; GIFT City for marathon events and beach volleyball; Naranpura Sports Complex for badminton and gymnastics; the South-West Ahmedabad arena for combat sports; EKA Arena for football prelims; and the SVPSE for swimming, gymnastics, cricket, diving, sport climbing and more.
