After Rahul Banerjee Dies By Drowning, Wife Priyanka Sarkar Says In 1st Statement, ‘Respect Our Boundaries’
Some stories feel too sudden, too heavy to fully take in. What began as just another working day for a beloved actor has now left an entire industry in shock, struggling to process a loss that came without warning.
Bengali actor Rahul Arunoday Banerjee died on Sunday (March 29) after an accidental drowning at Talsari in Digha, near the Odisha–West Bengal border. He was 43. Banerjee had travelled to the coastal location for the shoot of a Bengali television project. Filming for a serial titled Bhole Baba Par Karega had been underway since morning.
According to initial reports, the incident took place after filming wrapped up in the afternoon. Banerjee reportedly entered the sea alone after pack-up. Within a short span, he went missing, triggering panic among members of the production team who were present at the spot.

Crew members and technicians rushed to respond and managed to pull him out of the water. He was immediately taken in a vehicle to Digha Sub-divisional Hospital, located around 10–12 kilometres from Talsari Beach. Doctors later declared him dead at 6:10 PM. Preliminary findings point to drowning as the cause of death.
Wife Shares First Statement
Priyanka Sarkar addressed the tragedy in a statement shared on Instagram, asking for privacy during the difficult time. She wrote, “This is a time of immense grief and deep despair for us. In this difficult moment, we sincerely request space and privacy."
She further added, “There is a child, a mother, a family, and loved ones trying to navigate this loss together. We kindly urge our friends and colleagues in the media to respect our boundaries, refrain from intrusion, and allow us the dignity to grieve in peace. Your understanding and support mean more than ever at this time," she added.

The couple’s love story
Banerjee’s personal life, particularly his relationship with Priyanka Sarkar, had long drawn public attention. The two met during the making of Chirodini Tumi Je Amar in 2008, where their on-screen chemistry turned into a real-life relationship. They married in 2010.
After several years together, the couple separated in 2017, and Priyanka filed for divorce in 2018. They share a son, Sohoj, born on December 9, 2013.
In a turn that surprised many, the couple chose to reconcile in 2023, withdrawing their divorce petition and rebuilding their relationship away from the public eye.
A Familiar Face Across Screens
Rahul Banerjee was widely recognised for his work across Bengali cinema and television. He rose to fame with the 2008 romantic drama Chirodini Tumi Je Amar, directed by Raj Chakrabarty, which became a major commercial success and established him as a popular face.
Over the years, he built a diverse body of work in films, television and digital platforms. His film credits included Tumi Asbe Bole (2014), Zulfiqar (2016), Byomkesh Gotro (2018), Biday Byomkesh (2018), and The Academy of Fine Arts (2025), among others.
On television, he appeared in shows such as Hargouri Pice Hotel, Mohonna, Desher Mati, and Sahaj Katha, connecting with audiences beyond the big screen.
Early Beginnings And Industry Reactions
Banerjee’s journey in performance began early. He started acting in theatre at the age of three with his father Biswanath Banerjee’s troupe, Bijoygarh Atmaprakash, and went on to perform in nearly 450 stage shows. He studied at Naktala High School and later graduated from Ashutosh College.
His film debut came in 2004 with Aabar Aashbo Phire, but it was Chirodini Tumi Je Amar that marked a turning point in his career.
Filmmaker Raj Chakraborty, who directed him in that film, told PTI, “After I received phone calls about his death, I wished it was not true. But, later it was confirmed. I am in a state of shock." He also described Banerjee as spontaneous and full of potential.
Actor-director Anjan Dutta, who had known Banerjee for years, also expressed grief, though he was too shaken to speak in detail about the incident.
Providing details of the incident, Banerjee’s co-actor Diganta Bagchi told PTI, “After today’s shoot, he went alone to the water but somehow got entangled in something under the water… The exact circumstances are not clear. Suddenly, people, including crew members, were shouting that Rahul was drowning and we pulled him out of the water. We rushed him to Digha hospital, where doctors declared him brought dead."
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee also expressed her grief over the actor’s sudden passing. “I am shocked, deeply saddened to hear the news that the distinguished, young, and popular actor Rahul Arunoday Banerjee is suddenly no longer among us. I am unable to comprehend what exactly happened. He was one of my favourite actors and a person I truly admired. I extend my heartfelt condolences to his bereaved family, loved ones, and countless admirers," she said.
She added, “Rahul’s sudden passing is an irreparable loss to the Bengali entertainment industry."
Rahul Banerjee is survived by his wife Priyanka Sarkar and their son, Shohoj Banerjee.
