When the story of Harish Rana captured the collective prayers of an entire nation, people paused, empathised, and watched the Supreme Court judgement unfold as it passed a historic decision allowing passive euthanasia for Rana, who was in a vegetative state for over 13 years. But while many watched that struggle unfold on screens and across timelines, another family has been living a similar nightmare away from the spotlight in Mumbai, holding on to a single, simple wish: that their son wakes up and returns to life.
In a rented flat in Borivali, 35-year-old Anand Dixit has been in a vegetative state for the past two and a half years, and his parents refuse to give up hope.
The tragedy began on the very day Anand bought a new electric scooty. It should have been a day of joy, but on a foggy winter night in Uttar Pradesh’s Gorakhpur, when Anand was on a ride on his new bike, within moments his life changed forever. The ride turned into an accident, and he was rushed to Pratibha Hospital in critical condition. After a month of treatment there, he was brought to Mumbai, first admitted to Lotus Hospital, then referred to Kokilaben Hospital, and is currently being treated at Bombay Hospital. What followed was not only a medical battle but also a financial storm no family anticipated.
The total cost of Anand’s treatment has crossed Rs 4 crore, an amount that would shatter even well-off families. Anand’s father, Virendra Dixit, sold the only land he owned in the village and took hefty loans to make up the rest. “I’ve sold everything I own just to hear him say Papa one more time," he said.
But as the money drained, misfortune did not stop. While Anand fought for his life in hospital corridors, his father says the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation demolished the family’s only home, leaving them without shelter and forcing them into a rented apartment as they struggled to keep up with mounting expenses.
Every month now brings an unthinkable burden; a full-time caretaker costs 90,000 rupees, and medical consumables and check-ups push the monthly tally past Rs 4 lakh. At a time when hope and fear live with equal weight for the family, another blow came from an unexpected direction: the health insurance provider. “We were looted first by hospital bills, and after that came the insurance rejection," Virendra said.
Inside their rented home, Anand’s mother keeps his things ready that once defined his daily life, including his watch and smartphone. These items sit quietly in a corner, not discarded or packed away but preserved with the belief that one day he will wake up, reach for them, and resume the life that paused in a single moment.
The family has watched the Harish Rana case unfold and seen how a nation held hope, empathy, and prayers for him. They don’t want the same to happen to their son, Anand’s father said, a stark reminder of the fear that haunts them.
“The doctors treating him say only one thing to us: that the boy is young, and all his system is fine, which isn’t a problem; the injury is the reason for this condition. We are clinging to hope that a miracle happens and my son becomes okay soon," says Dixit.
