Afghan Health Minister to visit India next week
Afghanistan's Public Health Minister Mawlawi Noor Jalal Jalali will visit India next week. This follows visits by other Afghan ministers. India continues to provide extensive humanitarian and healthcare support to Afghanistan. Projects include health centers and clinics. India also donated medicines and vaccines. This cooperation strengthens India-Afghanistan ties.
New Delhi: Afghanistan's public health minister Mawlawi Noor Jalal Jalali plans to visit India next week, in what would be the third ministerial-level trip from Kabul in the past three months. The trip will help boost India-Afghanistan relations amid Pakistan's efforts to derail ties, said experts.
Jalal's trip will follow those of foreign minister Amir Khan Muttaqi and commerce minister Nooruddin Azizi in October and November, respectively. It comes amid widening healthcare cooperation between the two countries, as India continues to provide extensive humanitarian support to Afghanistan, according to an official.
India-backed projects include establishing a thalassaemia Centre, a modern diagnostic centre and upgrading the heating system at the Indira Gandhi Institute of Child Health in Kabul.
Plans are also underway for a 30-bed hospital in Bagrami district, an oncology Centre, a trauma centre and five maternity clinics. Additionally, about 75 prosthetic limbs have been fitted for Afghan nationals.
In November, India donated more than 16 tonnes of medicines to combat vector-borne diseases such as malaria, dengue and leishmaniasis.
India has also provided essential healthcare support to Afghanistan to help it prevent influenza and meningitis in the country. External affairs ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal recently informed that India delivered more than 63,700 doses of influenza and meningitis vaccines to Kabul. He said that India had reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Afghanistan's public health.
At the UN Security Council earlier this week, India's permanent representative P Harish highlighted India's medical support to Afghanistan, saying, "India also continues to extend medical assistance and provide high-quality healthcare treatment to Afghan nationals."
During foreign minister Muttaqi's visit, India gifted 20 ambulances to Afghanistan. India was also quick to respond to earthquakes in Afghanistan, supplying food, relief materials and aid for repatriated refugees.
