Adi Kailash Yatra to begin May 1: Permits, routes, and preparations in full swing in Uttarakhand
Pithoragarh: The sacred Adi Kailash Yatra is set to begin on May 1, provided weather conditions remain favorable. Located near the China border, Adi Kailash and Om Parvat attract thousands of devotees every year.
This year, preparations are in full swing to ensure a safe and comfortable journey for pilgrims.
SDM Ashish Joshi recently held a meeting with officials from local departments, taxi unions, and homestay operators. He directed road repairs at sensitive points like Mangti Nala, Elagad, Koolagad, Najang, and Pyalsiti. Drinking water arrangements for Gunji village are being made through tankers, while the Drinking Water Corporation has been instructed to streamline supply. BRO has also been asked to strengthen vulnerable stretches during the yatra and monsoon season.
An Inner Line Permit (ILP) is mandatory for visiting Adi Kailash. These permits will be issued from May 1 at Dharchula tehsil or through the online portal. Pilgrims must provide ID and photographs. The SDM has warned against fake permits, cautioning CSC operators of strict legal action if violations occur.
Taxi union leaders requested that residents of Dharchula tehsil be allowed to travel using Aadhaar and attached documents, as was permitted last year. The SDM agreed to this demand. There was also a request to allow travel via the Old Lipu Pass, which the SDM promised to discuss with higher authorities.
Homestay operators have been urged to maintain cleanliness, provide better facilities, and behave cordially with travelers. Due to the gas crisis, they have been advised to use alternative resources. The Animal Husbandry Department will set up camps to register, tag, and ensure mules used during the yatra.
– By rail: Kathgodam is the nearest railway station.
– By air: Pantnagar Airport and Naini Saini Airport (Pithoragarh).
– By road: Reach Kathgodam/Haldwani, then Pithoragarh, Dharchula, Gunji, Kuti village, and finally Adi Kailash.
– Beyond Dharchula, the road is hilly and sensitive. Shared taxis and jeeps are available. Cars can reach up to Kuti village, after which a short trek is required.
The most convenient months are May to June. Rainy and winter seasons make the path difficult. Weather at Om Parvat can change suddenly, and mobile networks are weak. Pilgrims are advised to take care of their health due to high altitude conditions.
