Rush Hour: Actor Dharmendra dies at 89, Surya Kant is India’s new chief justice and more

Actor Dharmendra Deol died at 89 in Mumbai due to age-related ailments. He had been admitted to hospital twice in the past three weeks, but was discharged after treatment each time.
In a career spanning six decades, Dharmendra starred in several iconic films such as Sholay, Dharam Veer and Chupke Chupke.
Dharmendra made his debut in the 1960 Hindi film Dil Bhi Tera Hum Bhi Tere and went on to act in more than 300 movies. Among the popular movies that he acted in were Mera Gaon Mera Desh, Blackmail and Seeta Aur Geeta.
He is survived by his wives Prakash Kaur and Hema Malini, and six children – Sunny Deol, Bobby Deol, Esha Deol, Ahana Deol, Ajeeta and Vijeta. Read on.

Justice Surya Kant has been sworn in as the 53rd chief justice of India. The oath of office was administered by President Droupadi Murmu at a ceremony at the Rashtrapati Bhavan.
Kant succeeds BR Gavai, who retired on Sunday. He will have a tenure of 14 months till February 9, 2027.
The new chief justice has said that tackling the Supreme Court's 90,000-case backlog would be his “first and foremost priority”.
Kant became the chief justice of the Himachal Pradesh High Court in 2018 before being elevated as a Supreme Court judge in May 2019.vHe has been the chairperson of the Supreme Court Legal Services Committee since November 2024. Read on.
The crash of a Tejas jet in Dubai on Friday was an isolated incident caused by “exceptional circumstances”, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited has said. The government-run manufacturer of the light combat aircraft did not elaborate on the nature of these circumstances.
On Friday, an Indian Air Force pilot was killed after a Tejas aircraft crashed during an aerial display at the Dubai Air Show. The crash occured in an open area near the Al Maktoum International Airport, the venue of the event.
The Air Force has set up a court of inquiry to determine the cause of the crash.
In March 2024, a Tejas aircraft crashed during a training sortie in Rajasthan's Jaisalmer. The pilot had ejected safely in that incident. Read on.
The Supreme Court has dismissed a plea seeking a first information report against a Delhi art gallery for displaying paintings by MF Husain that the petitioner claimed were offensive. The paintings featured Hindu deities Hanuman and Ganesha.
In August, a Delhi court had dismissed a revision petition that sought that an FIR be registered against the DAG, formerly known as the Delhi Art Gallery.
The court had upheld a January order by a judicial magistrate, who had refused to direct the police to investigate the matter. In September, the Delhi High Court had also declined to order a case to be registered.
The complainant had challenged the orders before the Supreme Court.
The DAG welcomed the verdict, saying that the dismissal at four levels of the judiciary “underscores the consistency and clarity of the courts' view on this matter”. Read on.
