After the Supreme Court denied bail to activist and former JNU student Umar Khalid in a larger conspiracy case related to North East Delhi riots 2020, Mr. Khalid said that he is happy for others who got bail.
Speaking to his partner Banojyotsna Lahiri over phone from Tihar jail, Mr. Khalid said he is relieved for those who will now be out of prison.

His partner Banojyotsna Lahiri posted on X a part of their conversation.
“I am really happy for the others, who got bail! So relieved”, Mr. Khalid said.
“I'll come tomorrow for Mulaqat”, Ms. Lahiri replied.
“Good good, aa jana. Ab yahi zindagi hai” (Good, do come. This is my life now) Ms. Lahiri posted on X quoting Mr. Khalid.
Mr. Khalid, who is languishing in jail for over five years was denied bail by the Supreme Court on Monday (January 5, 2026).
Another student activist Sharjeel Imam was also denied bail by the apex court which, in its order, has said that ‘enough material is there to indicate their involvement in the criminal conspiracy.'
Activists Gulfisha Fatima, Meeran Haider, Shifa Ur Rehman, Mohd Saleem Khan, and Shadab Ahmed, were given bail.
Over the past five years, Mr. Khalid approached multiple courts, seeking bail. The Supreme Court, on multiple occasions, has held the bail as a ‘rule' even applicable to offences under special statutes such as the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).
Mr. Khalid's father, S Q R Ilyas, who was in the court premises, termed the judgement as ‘unfortunate'.
Soon after the decision was announced, media persons and cameramen surrounded Mr Illyas who left the spot with heavy heart.
“The judgement is out, I have nothing more to say,” he said.
Mr Khalid's acquaintance said that his parents remained confined to home on Monday (January 5) and hardly spoke with anyone.
“He just came out on bail for his sister's wedding. The family was happy. But the decision of the SC for not allowing him to apply for bail for another one year is injustice for them,” said a close friend.
"I am really happy for the others, who got bail! So relieved", Umar said.
"I'll come tomorrow for Mulaqat", I replied.
