Aamir Khan Reveals Dharmendra Watched Sunny Deol’s Lahore 1947 Before His Death: ‘It’s Not Released Yet…’
Veteran actor Dharmendra's death on November 24 has left the film industry grieving. Recently, at the 56th International Film Festival of India, Aamir Khan paid tribute to Dharmendra, and recalled fond memories with him. During the interaction, he also revealed that Dharam ji watched Sunny Deol starrer ‘Lahore 1947' before he passed away. Aamir said that he is extremely glad he got to show Dharmendra the film as it was one of his favourite scripts. For the unversed, ‘Lahore 1947' is produced by Aamir Khan and helmed by Rajkumar Santoshi. It is based on Asghar Wajahat's renowned play ‘Jis Lahore Nai Dekhya, O Jamyai Ni.'
While speaking at the 56th IFFI, Aamir Khan said that he is fortunate he got to spend some time with Dharmendra before his death. “In fact, Lahore 1947, the film we have made with Sunny, I had the good fortune of showing him the film. So he has seen the film," said Aamir. He further added, “It's not released yet, of course. But I am so glad he got to see the film. Because this was one of his favourite scripts."
In the same conversation, Aamir also spoke about missing Dharmendra's prayer meet, which was held on 27th November. “Today, in fact, I'm not there in Bombay, but today is his prayer meeting, unfortunately. I'm missing it. And I was very close to him because in the last, I would say last one year, I must have met him about 7-8 times. Because I used to really enjoy his company so I used to go and sit with him," he said.
He further recalled the time he took his son Azad to meet Dharmendra. “One day I took Azad with me, you know, my son. I said I want you to meet someone because Azad has not seen his work, really. But Azad came with me, and we spent a couple of hours with him, and it was really wonderful. You know, Dharamji was not only such a fine actor, but he was a great human being," said Aamir.
Based on Asghar Wajahat's renowned play Jis Lahore Nai Dekhya, O Jamyai Ni, the film is set during the partition, and the story revolves around a Muslim family that migrates from Lucknow to Lahore and is allocated a haveli vacated by a departing Hindu family. However, things take a dramatic turn when they realise the Hindu family is still staying in the house and refuses to leave. Alongside Sunny Deol and Preity Zinta, Lahore 1947 also features Shabana Azmi, Ali Fazal, and Karan Deol in prominent roles.
