VK Malhotra: A selfless archer with his sight on public service
Vijay Kumar Malhotra, a 93-year-old veteran leader, passed away, leaving a legacy of relentless hard work, determination, and service. He embodied the core ethos of RSS, Jan Sangh, and BJP through his extensive political career, social work, institution-building, and significant contributions to Indian archery. His life serves as an enduring role model for public servants.
On September 30, we lost one of our senior-most leaders, Vijay Kumar Malhotra. At 93, he lived a long and accomplished life. But more importantly, he led a life of relentless hard work, determination and service. He also provided a glimpse of the core ethos of RSS, Jan Sangh, and BJP: courage in the face of adversity, service above self, and deep-rooted commitment to national and cultural values.
Malhotra's family had suffered the horrors of Partition. As a result, he immersed himself in serving others through social work and helping displaced families. His fellow karyakartas in the Jan Sangh included the likes of Madanlal Khurana and Kidar Nath Sahni.
In 1967, Jan Sangh secured a resounding victory in the first-ever Delhi Metropolitan Council election. LK Advani became council chairman, and the 36-yr-old Malhotra became chief executive councillor, roughly equivalent to the post of CM. He used his tenure to address the needs of Delhi, especially on infrastructure and civic issues.
This responsibility also deepened Malhotra's bond with Delhi. He took part in the cow protection movement of the late-1960s. He was at the forefront of the anti-Emergency movement in the 1970s. When Sikhs were being attacked in Delhi after the assassination of Indira Gandhi in 1984, he was a voice of calm and peace, standing strongly with the Sikh community.
Be it civic administration, state legislature, or Parliament, Malhotra had seen it all. His 1999 Lok Sabha electoral victory against Manmohan Singh is still remembered by supporters and opponents alike. When he spoke in Parliament, it was always well-researched and well-presented. His tenure as deputy leader of opposition during UPA-1 offers valuable lessons to students of politics and parliamentary democracy. He effectively opposed the-then government, especially on corruption and terrorism.
Politics was only one facet of Malhotra persona. He was also an excellent academic who had secured double promotions in school, graduating ahead of schedule. His proficiency in Hindi literature and language saw him translating Syama Prasad Mookerjee's speeches from English to Hindi.
One of Malhotra's greatest traits was his role as an institution-builder. He was among the leaders who founded and nurtured several institutions related to RSS. Through his efforts, many cultural, educational and social organisations grew, going on to become nurseries of talent and service, carrying forward the vision of a self-reliant, value-driven society.
Malhotra also made an indelible mark in the world of sports. Archery was his great passion and he served as president of Archery Association of India for decades. Under his leadership, Indian archery gained global recognition, and he tirelessly worked to provide athletes with platforms and opportunities. His role in sports administration reflected the same traits he displayed in public life: dedication, organisational ability, and pursuit of excellence. Malhotra was the ideal party man, never speaking anything that could embarrass karyakartas or their ideology. A few days ago, I was at a programme to inaugurate Delhi BJP's new HQ, where I fondly recalled him. He was thrilled when BJP formed government in Delhi earlier this year and had immense expectations. May his life and accomplishments continue to remain a role model for generations of public servants in the times to come.
