919 dead in Nepal-China flash flood
The toll in the flash flood and mudslide in Nepal and China, which occurred on Wednesday, rose to 919 on Monday. Of these, 903 deaths were reported in Nepal and 16 on the Chinese side of the border.
More than 4,200 persons were missing in Nepal. This included 275 Indians, New Delhi had said on Saturday night. The number was nearly 550 on the Chinese side.
More than 10,000 persons, including 252 foreigners, had been rescued in Nepal as of 9 am on Monday, the country’s disaster management authority said.
Nearly 150 Indians were rescued from flash flood-hit Nepal as of 5.30 pm on Sunday, the Ministry of External Affairs said. While 403 Indian citizens had safely crossed into Nepal from China, 500 were reported safe on the Chinese side of the border, it added.
The technical team from India for tunnel rescue retrieved the mortal remains of one person from a tunnel near the Langtang hydroelectric project amid harsh weather conditions, the external affairs ministry said on Sunday.
Nepal’s disaster management authority said that seven Indian and 15 Chinese citizens were rescued from a hydropower tunnel on Sunday.
More than 100 workers are believed to be trapped inside multiple hydropower tunnels in Nepal.
“The tunnel rescue operations team continued its work today and supplemented the search and rescue efforts of Nepali Army at hydropower sites in Chilime and Langtang,” the ministry said.
A 19-member forensics team sent from India to assist in analysing the DNA samples to identify the mortal remains of those who died in the floods began functioning on Sunday. Indian Ambassador to Nepal Naveen Srivastava briefed the team.
The floods occurred in the Rasuwa district along Nepal’s northern border with China on Wednesday. The mountainous district is located about 120 km north of Kathmandu. As there was no rainfall in the area, residents did not have a warning about the deluge.
The United States Geological Survey has said that the floods were caused by a glacial collapse that sent a wall of water and debris downstream, reported AFP.
The International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development, which works on climate and glacial conditions in Nepal, had earlier stated that according to its preliminary investigation, a large volume of ice and rock debris had entered the Lende Khola, a tributary of the Bhotekoshi river, which generated a sudden surge that carried water, sediment and large boulders downstream.
