63-Yr-Old Spikes Soft Drinks With Urine For A Year, Wears ‘Enjoy Coca-Cola’ T-Shirt To Court
A 63-year-old former property agent has pleaded guilty in a Hong Kong court to a disturbing series of incidents involving urine-spiked soft drinks placed in supermarkets across the city. The man, identified as Franklin Lo Kim-ngai, admitted to contaminating bottles of Coca-Cola Plus and 7-Up with urine and leaving them among other goods in Wellcome and ParknShop outlets.
According to the South China Morning Post (SCMP), Lo told the court he acted out of dissatisfaction with supermarket staff and emotional distress following his retirement and divorce.
Lo appeared at Kowloon City Court wearing a grey T-shirt emblazoned with the words “Enjoy Coca-Cola" as he faced charges of administering a noxious substance with intent to injure. The offences are alleged to have taken place between July 21, 2024, and August 6, 2025, including at a Wellcome branch in Sham Shui Po's Nam Cheong Place shopping centre.
Court documents stated that Lo tampered with an unspecified number of soft drink bottles “with intent to injure, aggrieve or annoy" members of the public. On Tuesday, he pleaded guilty to both administering a noxious substance and attempting to commit the offence. Under Hong Kong's Offences Against the Person Ordinance, the crime carries a maximum penalty of three years' imprisonment.
Lawyer Blames Divorce, Retirement
Lo's lawyer told the court that his client had been suffering from depression after losing emotional support following his divorce. His ex-wife and son reportedly relocated overseas and have stopped contacting him, while he has also endured the loss of both parents.
The lawyer said Lo described his actions as a “prank" meant to cause trouble for supermarket employees.
Magistrate Patrick Tsang Hing-tung adjourned the case until October 21 pending further police investigation and rejected Lo's application for bail. Police said in a press briefing that the suspect may have targeted supermarkets in Sham Shui Po, Mong Kok and Wan Chai over the past year.
How Did The Matter Come To Light?
The case came to light after multiple reports of contaminated soft drinks at several Wellcome and ParknShop outlets surfaced. In one incident, a nine-year-old boy fell ill after unknowingly drinking a urine-spiked beverage purchased from a Wellcome store at Union Park Centre in Mong Kok in July 2025. The child was hospitalised and later discharged the same day without lasting symptoms.
Dr Fong Lai-ying, director of the Hong Kong Food Innovation and Technology Centre, warned that urine could contain viruses, drug residues, and other harmful substances.
“If that person is unhealthy, the problem is very serious. If they are unhealthy or have taken medicine, there will be drug residue. Proteinuria and glycosuria can all be found in urine," she said, adding that anyone who unknowingly consumes such a drink should flush it out by drinking large amounts of water.
