5 Players Delhi Capitals Can Release Ahead Of IPL 2026 Auction
Delhi Capitals (DC) had one of the most curious seasons in the IPL last year. Starting with a new ownership, a revamped coaching staff, and a newly promoted captain in Axar Patel, they looked like the best team after the first half.
They won four matches on the trot, lost narrowly to the Mumbai Indians in the fifth, and tied the sixth game. Without changing much of the team or the tactics, they won only two of the next eight (one was a wash-out) and missed out on a top-four finish by a point and some NRR ratings.
But for those who have followed the team for a long time know that inconsistency is synonymous with the Capitals. There was a brief phase when Ricky Ponting was the coach that they showcased an identity and looked competitive for the title, but it was bookended by rather confusing times where nothing clicked for long.
What IPL 2025 did show was that they had the fundamentals in place and perhaps only a few tweaks can be enough for a top-four push. For that to happen, DC will need to get rid of some non-performers and use the vacant purse to bring in effective solutions.
Here's a list of players they can release:
After a couple of good seasons at the Gujarat Titans, where he was even challenging for a spot back in the Indian team, Mohit Sharma had a forgettable IPL 2025 with the Capitals. He managed only two wickets in eight matches, averaging 128.50, with an economy rate of 10.28.
The ever-flattening tracks in the IPL have simply not helped his case, and Delhi's Arun Jaitley Stadium is among the flattest of them all. It won't be smart to bet anything more than the base price for a 37-year-old quick.
DC can make better use of the Rs. 2.20 crore they spent on him.
The Sri Lankan fast-bowler has his strengths and weaknesses. He is excellent with the new ball and can be lethal when there's a bit of bounce and movement available for pacers.
However, his IPL success has been limited at best. Last season, he took four wickets in five chances, with a best of 1/24. DC will need to improve its pace department, and the Rs. 75 lakhs can be used for a young quick.
It would be harsh to blame DC for trusting Jake Fraser-McGurk. When on song, he's a talent equivalent to Abhishek Sharma, with power to burn in the powerplay.
However, that high-risk game invites a lot of variance and spells of really bad scores if the technique and plans aren't polished enough. He could score only 55 runs in five innings before being dropped and didn't get a chance again.
His form post-IPL hasn't been particularly great either. There's a very strong case for releasing him and using the Rs. 9 crore elsewhere. If DC trust him to come good still, they can release him and get him for a likely much cheaper price, as there wouldn't be much interest in his services in the IPL 2026 auction.
The left-arm quick from Tamil Nadu was one of the most intriguing cases. DC spent a whopping Rs. 10.75 crore on him, but played him in only two matches. Team mentor Kevin Pieterson lashed out at a journalist asking about the quick's limited starts, saying that there wasn't a place to fit him in.
Natarajan has dealt with many injuries of late, but at this stage, it seems the best solution for him and his franchise would be to move on and look for a fresh start. He could return to another team where he's valued for a cheaper price and start to rebuild his career.

This is a tricky one. Left-arm pacer Mitchell Starc has often been overpriced in the auctions, but at the Kolkata Knight Riders, his performances in the playoffs made him worth every penny for the Rs 24.75 spent, while at DC, he couldn't justify the Rs 11.75 crore price tag, despite having almost identical overall figures.
He has already forgiven the T20I format and there's always a risk of Starc pulling out of the IPL last minute. Saving that huge amount of money and using it at the other excellent pacers that could be going under the hammer could be the better move for DC.new d
