450+ Sorties, crores spent: Bihar election campaign ends on high note

Bihar's assembly election campaign concluded with an unprecedented aerial display, as helicopters and chartered planes undertook over 450 sorties. Top politicians crisscrossed the state, incurring substantial costs for daily rallies and roadshows. This intensive air travel marked the culmination of a month-long electoral battle for power.
The skies over Bihar turned into a battleground for weeks, as helicopters and chartered planes carried top politicians across the state in a campaign of unmatched scale and cost. By Sunday evening, the airborne armada fell silent, marking the end of campaigning for the second phase of assembly elections after more than 450 sorties, according to Times of India sources.
Up to 25 helicopters and 12 chartered planes flew daily from Patna airport to 122 constituencies across 20 districts on November 11, reflecting the soaring expenses of modern political warfare. Airport sources told ToI that traffic climbed steadily, with Phase 1 on November 6 logging over 210 sorties and 15–18 helicopters airborne daily from October 25 to November 5. Phase 2 saw a further surge, with around 23 helicopters operating daily in the final three days, totalling about 240 sorties.
Chartered jets cost between Rs 4–9 lakh per hour depending on fittings like sofas, beds, washrooms, and catering. Single-engine helicopters for four passengers were priced around Rs 1.5 lakh per hour, while twin-engine models ranged from Rs 2.5 lakh to Rs 4 lakh per hour.
“For election campaigning, prominent politicians first arrive at Patna airport by chartered plane. From there, they board helicopters to attend rallies in other districts of Bihar. Four to five chartered planes carrying politicians arrive at the airport daily,” an airport source told ToI, estimating total air travel expenses ran into crores of rupees.
For the second phase, over 3.7 crore electors are eligible to vote for 1,302 candidates- 1,165 men, 136 women, and one third-gender candidate- at 45,399 polling centres. Key contests include Chakai, where JD(U) minister Sumit Kumar Singh seeks re-election; BJP MLA Shreyasi Singh's Jamui; JD(U) minister Leshi Singh's Dhamdaha; and BJP minister Neeraj Kumar Singh's Chhatapur.
Sunday's campaign finale deployed 26 flying machines. RJD's Tejashwi Yadav, contesting from Raghopur and anchoring the Mahagathbandhan campaign, delivered 16 back-to-back rallies across Arwal, Rohtas, and Jehanabad. VIP chief Mukesh Sahani toured Bhagalpur and Katihar.
Union minister Amit Shah addressed rallies in Arwal and Sasaram, while Defence minister Rajnath Singh campaigned in Aurangabad and Sasaram. UP CM Yogi Adityanath toured Supaul, and Union minister Jitan Ram Manjhi covered Nawada, Gaya, Aurangabad, and Sheohar.
CM Nitish Kumar addressed rallies in Aurangabad and Rohtas. “Nitish addressed 84 rallies in both phases — 73 by helicopter, 11 by road,” JD(U) spokesperson Basudev Kushwaha said. Congress MP Rahul Gandhi campaigned in Kishanganj and Purnia. LJP(RV) chief Chirag Paswan rallied in Katihar and Bhagalpur. Deputy CM Samrat Choudhary spoke in Banka, Jamui, and Bhagalpur, while Vijay Kumar Sinha wrapped up in Sitamarhi. Tejashwi's elder brother, Tej Pratap Yadav, addressed supporters in Kesariya of East Champaran.
Jitan Ram Manjhi of HAM(S) attended 72 rallies and roadshows by helicopter, largely in Magadh. In contrast, Jan Suraaj's Prashant Kishor avoided the sky, relying on door-to-door mobilisation.
The campaign for Bihar's second phase concluded on Sunday evening, ahead of polling on November 11 and counting of votes on November 14, closing a month-long battle that saw record aerial mobilization by parties vying for power in the state.Add as a Reliable and Trusted News Source Add Now!
