29-Yr-Old Woman Quits 'Thankless' Job For Inner Peace: 'Aap Shaadi Karloge, Ladka Ghar Chalayega'
A 29-year-old Delhi woman is grabbing attention online after she quit her well-paying government job to prioritise mental health. Vaani shared her journey on Instagram which inspired many but at the same time it also started discussions about gender and societal expectations.
Vaani was a probationary officer at Punjab National Bank (PNB) when she quit. She joined in 2022 after clearing the IBPS exam and training. After this, she was posted in Meerut as a Scale One Officer.
Why Did She Quit
Although the role offered financial security and lifestyle perks, Vaani revealed it slowly took away her happiness.
“I used to be such a happy-go-lucky person, but over the past three years, I had slowly started hating the person I was becoming. I became grumpy and easily annoyed. It was time to choose mental peace over financial stability," she said in a video shared on Instagram.
She clarified that her choice reflected her personal experience and was not meant to discourage others.
“But this is how I felt, and I don't regret my decision even a bit. And trust me, the happiness and mental peace you get after leaving a place where you don't belong is far superior to any regret you might have," she said.
In the caption, Vaani wrote, “Not all heroes wear capes… some just quit jobs. So I closed the chapter that was no longer serving me."

The Gender Debate Online
While many celebrated her courage, some users highlighted a gender angle. A reel showing her partner proposing in front of the Eiffel Tower led some to comment that she would “anyway get married" which implied she had the option to step away from financial responsibilities unlike men.

A user commented, “Ma'am, you are not a man. Ask a senior man sitting beside you how many times they dared to declare themselves free but burden of responsibilities tied them."
Another added, “But didi apka kya hai, aap to shadi kar loge aur ladka apka ghar chala lega. Bechare ladke kya karenge. 15 saal se bank job me hu, clerical me join kiya tha aaj scale 3 hu but aaj bhi roz subah sochte hai aaj naukri chor denge but hota ni hai ji (But you will get married anyway and your husband will run the household. What will us poor men will do? I've been in a bank job for 15 years, joined as a clerk, now at scale 3, but still every morning, I think of quitting yet it never happens).
Others also expressed similar views with an individual writing, “Women can quit, sadly men don't have an option like quitting a job, they would forever be labeled as a failure."

Despite the criticism, many lauded Vaani for her decision to prioritise mental health over money.
A person shared, “Most beautiful thing I just see. Realising self and decisions for the self, needs guts. Infact, it's a break down to the social norms too and to be in part of rat race. Hope you're n happy and peace well now."

Vaani Explains Her Decision
Vaani also posted another video where she noted that she quit her job without a concrete Plan B but asked for support and understanding from her followers.
“Sab log judge karte hai without stepping into the other person's shoes. Mujhe bhi ye job bhot mehnat se mili thi, dream job jaise thi lekin mujhe nahi pata tha ki asliyat kuch aisi hogi (Everyone judges without stepping into another person's shoes. I also worked very hard to get this job; it felt like a dream job, but I didn't know the reality would be like this)," she explained in the caption.

She expressed gratitude for her family's support who played a huge role in supporting her choice.
Looking back on her time at the bank, Vaani acknowledged that the job had given her a lot. But, she realised that she “wasn't meant to be a part of it." She further stressed that people should stop “glorifying" stressful jobs.
