24-Year-Old Earns Rs 40 Lakh In Remote AI Job, Parents Worry ‘Kuch Illegal Toh Nahi’

24-Year-Old Earns Rs 40 Lakh In Remote AI Job, Parents Worry ‘Kuch Illegal Toh Nahi’
Success once followed a predictable formula for many families—study hard, secure a stable degree, and settle into a government or corporate job. Long hours at a desk were seen as a badge of dedication, directly tied to income and stability. But that definition has changed drastically today. Bringing this shift into sharp focus, a Delhi-based entrepreneur, Rohan Dhawan, has recently shared an anecdote about his 24-year-old nephew, a developer earning Rs 40 lakh per annum while working remotely for an AI startup.
Despite the impressive salary and role, his family is uneasy. Wondering why? They are worried not about the income, but about how little he appears to work. Yes, you read that correctly.
The post read, “Met my nephew last week. 24 years old and earning Rs 40 LPA. Remote dev at a YC-backed AI startup. Exceptional kids, but his parents looked tense."
‘Is He Doing Something Illegal?’
According to Dhawan, the young professional logs in for just three to four hours a day. This has left his parents confused and even suspicious.
Recalling how his dad pulled him aside and asked him a question he had no answer for, he wrote, ““Rohan, ye kuch karta hi nahi. 2-3 ghante laptop kholta hai aur band kar deta hai. Kuch illegal toh nahi kar raha (He doesn’t do any work. He just opens his laptop for 2-3 hours, then shuts it. Is he doing something illegal?)"
Old Expectations vs New Realities
Drawing a comparison, Dhawan pointed out that if the same individual were working 10–12 hour days at a traditional IT firm for a lower salary, it would likely be seen as more “respectable."
Dhawan pointed, “Had he been at a TCS/Infosys, burning 12-hour days for half the salary – that would’ve made them proud. This kid is 24, earning more than most people twice his age, and the family concern is that he’s not suffering enough."
“AI Has Compressed Work Hours"
Dhawan emphasised that AI is fundamentally changing how work gets done. Tasks that once required a full workday can now be completed in a few focused hours.
“We’re currently in an era where AI has genuinely compressed 8 hours of work into 3-4 hours of focused effort. A sharp developer today with the right tools can out-execute someone grinding 12-hour days the old way," he noted, calling it the reality of 2026.
What Are Social Media Users Saying?
The post struck a chord with many people, who shared similar experiences and perspectives on evolving work culture.
“I agree with your point, but I also think parents’ concern sometimes comes from uncertainty rather than old-school thinking alone. Today, high income with low visible effort can be hard for many families to understand, especially when there are also illegitimate ways people make money online. The real need is more awareness about how modern work and AI-driven productivity actually look," read a comment.
Another said, “AI and modern tools compress effort. If a 24-year-old produces more in 4 hours than most do in 12, that’s success, not laziness. We need to shift how we define work and achievement."
“We’re moving from a “time-based" definition of work to an “output-based" one. That transition is bound to feel uncomfortable," posted an individual.
Another commented, “The parents could be reacting to something deeper… integrity and long-term resilience. Early success without discipline can create brittle individuals. But yes, I agree with hours being a poor proxy for value."
“The father is correct. Work is work. Money has its worth. You work for 8 hours to earn. Looks like people have a misconception that AI can compress 8 hours to 1 hour. Working 2-3 hours a day at age 24 sounds very abnormal to me that too remotely. I am totally against being overworked, but at that age I was gearing to work because I was so enthusiastic," an account stated.
‘Results Should Matter More Than Hours’
Dhawan concluded by urging people to rethink how work is measured and valued. He noted that many young professionals today feel pressured to appear busy, even when they’ve completed their tasks efficiently, because “ease looks suspicious, and exhaustion looks respectable."
Calling for a mindset change, he wrote that results should matter more than optics, and output should matter more than hours. “Now you have a generation embarrassed about finishing work early. Pretending to be busier than they are because exhaustion looks respectable and ease looks illegal. This needs to change. Output should matter more than optics. Results should matter more than hours. Please don’t doubt your kids. Doubt your own measurements," he concluded.
What are your thoughts on the matter?
