The advent of the trend, called ‘2026 is the new 2016', shows keenness among people to go back to an earlier age of social media when they could be more expressive and engaging without worrying about trolls and the toxicity that is ever so prevalent today. As part of it, regular users and celebrities from different fields have been sharing personal archives and new content that appears as if it were captured with older media tech.
Nostalgia Galore
The trend reflects our subconscious or conscious inclination towards nostalgia as a feeling. Often failing to truly enjoy the moment amidst our busy lifestyles, we tend to look back and realise what we missed. The ‘2026 is the new 2016' trend has seen pictures and videos shared with captions such as ‘you just had to be there', ‘Happy 2016', ‘Wake up, it's 2016'.
Regular users and celebrities are sharing content with hazy filters, muted colours and lower image quality as was the norm a decade back. If not the archives, the edited version of the latest pictures and videos is being shared just to revisit what social media and real life felt back in time. According to the BBC, over 56 million videos and images have been made on TikTok and other social media platforms using filters that reflect the 2016 aesthetics.
On Instagram, in India and across the world, creators are going deep in their phone galleries and reproducing images and videos to recreate certain moments and scenes while giving them a grainy and oldish outlook. In an age of artificial intelligence, these pictures may appear a misfit. But back in 2016, people were indeed posting more for fun and less for validation and traffic. The filters and the selfies felt more innocent and fun and expressive than content that makes people look overly perfect and boastful of their brand appeal today.
