Ten-year-old Bodhana Sivanandan added another remarkable achievement to her rapidly growing list of milestones in her young chess career. The Harrow Primary School student won the women's first prize at the UK Open Blitz Championships in Leamington Spa on Saturday, earning £500 after an extraordinary performance of 13.5/15 points.
Her victory was built on composure and consistency, although she faced a significant challenge in the penultimate round. Defending champion Elmira Mirzoeva seemed to have the upper hand in their encounter but faltered at a crucial moment, blundering a pawn in what should have been a winning rook endgame — an opportunity Sivanandan seized with precision.
“I don't mind who I compete against, I only care about the game," Bodhana was quoted as saying by the BBC. “Chess helps me with so many other things, at school it helps with maths, art and music," she added.
Sivanandan's victory adds to an already landmark year for the young prodigy. Just last month, she gained global recognition after defeating former World Champion Mariya Muzychuk at the European Club Cup in Greece while representing She Plays to Win Lionesses, the 12th-seeded team. Born in London in 2015 to parents originally from Tiruchirappalli in Tamil Nadu, she has steadily become one of the brightest prospects in world youth chess.

Earlier in 2025, she shattered multiple records at the British Chess Championships in Liverpool by defeating Grandmaster Peter Wells at just 10 years, five months, and three days old. This triumph made her the youngest female chess player ever to beat a grandmaster, surpassing Carissa Yip's 2019 record, and earned her the distinction of becoming the youngest player to achieve a WGM norm.
Having first taken up chess during the COVID lockdown, Sivanandan has risen rapidly, even becoming the youngest person to represent England internationally in any sport during the 2024 Chess Olympiad in Hungary. With her latest victory, she cements her place among a promising new wave of English chess talents poised to make a global impact.
